I decided to clean the old bed room today (whole house, actually).
I have a king sized bed. It usually has a mountain of clothing on on side of it, and I sleep on the other. In a bid to do some spring cleaning I decided to tidy up my closet and put everything in there.
Well, it’s tidied. Neat even. And I still have a big pile of stuff that won’t fit in there. Not with a crowbar. Not with a can of axil grease and a team of trained contortionisits trying to stuff it in.
Humm. What the hell am I going to do with this last pile?
I can only fit half my wardrobe into my bedroom closets (two, but they’re truly tiny, like two feet wide each) and bureau, so I have a summer wardrobe and a winter wardrobe, which I switch from the guestroom closet as necessary. My problem right now is the effin’ weather – it’s mid June, and I’ve got two plastic bins of summer tops (casual and work) open in the middle of the floor – but it’s not really ready to get rid of all the (cotton) sweaters, etc.
My bf just laughed and rolled his eyes when he saw the mess last night. Since he always sees me in jeans and sweatshirts, he has a hard time conceptualizing the extent of my work wardrobe,
Is this all stuff you wear regularly? I’ve had to learn to rigorously weed out clothing, or I end up in your situation. My rule is: If I haven’t worn it in at least a year and it’s not some special occasion clothing, out it goes.
Another alternative is to go to Salvation Army like we did and find an old cedar wardrobe for cheap.
And there’s the under-the-bed storage bins, that are very useful for things that can be folded.
I have under the bed storage bins - full to bursting.
I have a wardrobe - full to bursting.
I have 3 closets, 1 walk in. I rotate summer/winter between them. My bedroom closet currently only holds my summer stuff - full to bursting.
I donate about 200 items of clothing per season to the Women In Need shelter. I also consign 75% of my wardrobe each season.
the problem I have is even though I have lots of space, and I regularly get rid of stuff I don’t wear, I just buy more and more and more. I’m at the point in the season where nothing else will fit. In fact, what I have won’t fit.
If storage space wasn’t my only problem, I would probably have what most people would refer to as an “addiction”. <blush>
My SO is fond of saying that my bedroom looks like my closet threw up.
Is your SO related to mine? He likes to say that a clothing bomb exploded in it. I want a walk-in closet! jealous I’ve told the SO that it’s a dealbreaker for when we move in together.
My philosophy is that if I haven’t even considered wearing it in 3 months, it goes onto eBay. Unfortunately, I made quite a bit there, and used it all to buy more clothes. At the moment I’m trying to clean and fit everything in my wardrobe because I just bought a new dress (a beautiful silk slip by Little Joe) and I want to make sure my room is worthy of it.
The only thing that has worked for me is choosing quality over quantity. I used to come home with lots of clothes, but now I just buy a couple of more expensive things, which curbs my addiction quite nicely.
I actually work in a high-end ladies consignment store. I bring home the Fendi’s, the Faragamo’s, the Via Spiga’s, the Gerry Weber’s, the Gucci’s, the Anne Klein’s, the Kate Spade’s, the Mondo’s.
I haven’t quite got this problem, but I’m getting there. The problem for me is that I have lazy clothes, every-day clothes, work clothes, nice clothes, hippie clothes, goth clothes, photo shoot costumes, and a collection of at least a dozen hats, jewelry for possibly any occasion… it’s all stuff I’ve gotten used or on clearance dirt cheap, but there is soooooooo much of it. I have to be prepared to dress up for absolutely anything, at a moment’s notice, you know.
I am so far opposite from this, it isn’t funny. I have a walk-in closet with maybe 10 linear feet for hanging clothes - about 18 inches isn’t used, and that’s after spreading the stuff that is there with a finger width between each hanger. I have 3 piles of sweaters/sweatshirts in the top of the closet - maybe 16" high each. I have 2 empty drawers in my dresser and a third that’s just a junk drawer.
Yeah, I’m a clothing minimalist. Jeans and t’s or polo shirts for work. I have a couple of dressy outfits for the rare occasions when I need them. That’s pretty much it. Some of my jeans are about to be retired - they’re ratty beyond ratty.
Um, no, you can’t have my extra closet space. Back away and no one will get hurt…
Maybe I should get a part-time job in an upscale consignment shop. I don’t want to pay what I pay for my clothes and truly don’t mind slightly used (we’ll just call them neo-vintage) designer items.
Is your job fun? How much of a discount do you get? The last pair of Via Spigas I purchased (sassy little numbers, too) were $130. How much did you plunk down for your pair?
Maybe you should start an Ask-the-Upscale-Consignment-Shop-Associate thread!
You know, Alice, sounds like you need to do what I saw a woman had done on a series they were doing on shoe addiction on a radio station a few years ago. She actually turned a spare bedroom into her giant walk-in shoe rack.
Yup. The only solution I can see is kick the roomie out and turn the WHOLE ROOM into a walk-in closet.
Oh, no. No, no, no, no, no. This will never do. One pair of black shoes?! See, you’re getting hung up on the color. It’s the style as well as the color that’s important. So it doesn’t matter how many pairs of black shoes I already own, if I don’t have a pair that looks like this pair that I’m about to buy, then I don’t have enough black shoes.
But you are talking to a girl that will buy a pair of cute shoes and then go out and buy a whole outfit to wear with them.
Well Juanita - most of the stuff I get is new with tags - women buy it and change their mind.
I have a pair of Cole Hann shoes that I got for $78 - the $340 price tag is still on the box.
I have a new Fendi bag - with the matching Fendi shoe bag they include with bag purchases, that I got for $245 CDN - the exact same one is on BlueFly for $495 US.
My Via Spiga boots I bought new, so they were a fortune - $550, however, my consigned Via Spiga shoes were $38.
My Gerry Webber suit I got for $248 - the $980 price tag still on. My Emanuel Ungaro I got for $298 - $1,200 price tag still on.
I get paid in clothing (I have a day job to pay my mortgage and what not :)) so basically I get a 100% discount - if I want something fabulous I just work a couple of shifts.
It’s really fun - my store is VERY particular about what we accept so the quality is high. We also clear for quite a few of the shi-shi-foo-foo boutiques in town, as well as a couple of golf courses, and a couple of jewlrey designers so we get a lot of new stock including golf shoes and wear, and hand made jewlrey. In the winter we get new ski wear - Descente, Izod, etc.
Also, I’m a really good employee - I always have good sales and make sure the store is tidy when I leave and don’t do anything bizzare, so if I get a snooty customer I can basically tell them to piss off. (Not in so many words.) This eliminates the whole “retail hell” type pressure.
If you can find a good store to get in at, and you LOOOVE clothing, it’s a great job to have.
garius - Bwahahahahahahaha. What - Evaaar! Seriously, I’m going to starve to death laughing here dude.
