I distinctly remember looking at the engine in the hummer and on one of the stickers it said something to the effect that the emitions on of the engine dont comply with US standards.
Also military hummers dont have air conditioning which makes them realy uncomfortably in the summer.
Our EOD (aka. “Bomb Squad”) Flights use an uparmored Humvee, used when they sweep for UXOs (unexploded ordnance). They sometimes have a turret on the top for the 50-cal rifle, sometimes not.
Why armored? As found in Bosnia, sometimes you don’t see what you run over, and something detonates. You’d rather have a totalled hummer than 4 dead EOD troops. . .
Bulletproof? By no means. But they will sustain a blast from an AP/AT mine, IED, or some other generic explosive (to a point).
The maximog http://www.maximog.com has them all beat hands down. It even comes with its own BWM motorcyce, and an un-maned remote control spy plane. The onboard tool kit has a submersible chain saw. Fatherjohn would love it.
The military Hummers I’m familiar with are either heavily armored - they’re supposed to stop 7.62, but I wouldn’t want to be the one proving it - or stripped. Stripped meaning no windows, no roof (exept for the bars), no doors, no windshield, and no seatbelts. To ride in one of those things you need goggles, a bandana, a helmet and a strong belief in a benign afterlife.
