(Old) Hunt for Bed October in the MMP

Well, I’m truly shocked. The desk actually called in a contractor to get the AC functioning! On a weekend! This is huge.

Breakfast was eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, avocado slices, and a bowl of blueberries with yogurt & honey. Whew! Wild and crazy, us.

Will do, even though da Red Sox are my team since I lived in Boston (circa 1973-1985). I’ll root for your Yankees unless they’re playing my Sox (such as the Sox are).

There were three TJ’s a short distance from my apartment in L.A. One was walking distance, one was a mile or two away, and the farthest one was about six miles away. The parking at the farthest one was adequate. Except for the new place up here, aisles can be tricky if someone parks a cart in one. Much better in the new one.

Cheese omelette-and-bacon sandwiches for breakfast today.

I used to do that sort of thing, until I discovered … Windows Key + V !!

Dog park success this morning. Ms Peach had 8 or so large dogs chasing after her, she was just faster and more nimble than the big guys. One really nice move of stopping, ducking and then the others went right over her, she took off the other way. Much laughs.

As I mentioned, walnut down season.
Imgur
Can I get walnuts arrested for indecent exposure?
Imgur
I’m about halfway done throwing them over the fence, I counted 80 tosses. That’s 1 tree.

Hope you have good weather for walking.

Now Amy’s down here and we’ve got the weather warning for strong winds until midnight. Doesn’t seem to be too bad.

Because she has a very patient caretaker. It’s great to read that she’s asking for fuss. :smiling_cat_with_heart_eyes:

Sending good trouble thoughts your way.

Yay! Sounds like you two are getting your schedules better synchronized.

Last year a friend of mine posted a picture of a stack of banned books, which I went out and bought, with the plan to read them. I should do that sometime.

That’s great news. She wasn’t so happy the last time, right?

We went to 5 different stores which sold Lego kits, and didn’t find the one I wanted. I even found a Lego catalog at the one store, and they don’t even show the kit, so I think it might not be sold in Switzerland, but I could order it directly from Lego. Most of the stores already have Christmas kits, and we did find the Wednesday one I was curious about, but decided against it, as we’re not that into the show.

Hubby decided he wanted peanut butter on toast for a snack and asked me where the peanut butter we bought today was. As he had put the groceries away, I couldn’t help him. He then remembed, that because the jar was cold (the grocery store is rather chilly), he put the peanut butter in the fridge. He was in a rush. Peanut butter is now in the normal location.

On Thursday I decided to add stairs to my walking, so I have other muscles complaining. My energy’s not quite 100%, but it’s enough to get things done (like look for Lego kits) and have energy to spare. I’ll probably sleep well tonight, especially with the weather cooling down and a bit of rain.

Happy Saturday!

Technology is pissing me off again.

HealthEquity now required a passkey. I tried setting it up on my phone (even though I hate being told I have to use my phone. I’m the human. I should be the boss.). I take pictures of both sides of my DL, and a selfie to verify my identity. When I continue it wants to use TouchID. I don’t use TouchID. I have it, but I don’t use it. It had an option to set up the passkey on another device. OK. A QR code popped up on the phone, and I was instructed to scan it on my other device. So I opened Photo Booth on my MacBook. I showed the camera the QR code on my phone, and nothing happened. (I expected a URL to come up.) Then I noticed that the phone said something like ‘We’re having trouble connecting. Try again later.’

I went back to the website (on the Mac) and tried the ‘Try another way’ link. It said [edited for clarity]:

We can’t log you in at this time.

Try the following to make your connection more secure.

  • Use a personal computer.
Use a device that’s not shared, especially one you’ve used to log in previously.

OK, I’m trying to use a personal computer. How do I do it? There are no links. There’s a phone number though. I call it. They couldn’t help me set up a passkey on my computer. I go back to the website and find this:

Access Without Mobile/Device Limitations

Do I need a smartphone to use a passkey?

Not necessarily. If you don’t use a smartphone, you can also still set up a passkey on a supported desktop, laptop or tablet computer.

So how do I do it? Well, there’s a link. It went to a Digital Accessibility Statement. Not instructions about how to set up a passkey without a phone; just a statement saying that they’re committed to accessibility.

I gave up and tried to set up the passkey on my phone (Dammit!), and was informed that my account had been locked.

For those who see my FB, I posted a video of Otis and Trevor frolicking. In fact, here’s a public version.

FCD has been mostly taking it easy in his shop - no heavy work, so yay! I finished the laundry and found a shepherd’s pie recipe, but I may hold off till tomorrow. We shall see. If Daughter’s crowd is here at suppertime, we’ll need more than that one recipe.

Other than that, much chillage has ensued.

I know why people decorate with spider webs for Halloween. I just took out the trash, and there are orb webs everywhere. I didn’t see the one next to the trash can, so now I have webs on me.

Funny coincidence.

At the beach the parking area is separated from the sand by an area of not really maintained dense random trees & undergrowth about 100 feet in depth & the length of the whole parking area, maybe 1/2 mile. Every so often a paved path leads through the “jungle” to connect beach to parking lot. That’s also where restrooms and beach showers are located. It’s part of the barrier island defenses intended to keep the ocean out of suburbia.

In the “jungle” it’s common to see birds, racoons, squirrels, the occasional land crab, and spiders; lots and lots of spiders. Anyone paying attention can quickly spot a web and spider within arm’s reach of the path, much less farther back in the tangled gloom.

Anyhow, as I’m showering off the sand there are two 20-something women yakking on a bench nearby. As I’m leaving, so are they. Then they get to looking at and talking about the spiders. Ref flyboy’s encounter, I commented to the ladies that to catch spiders all you have to do is walk into the jungle and one will be on your face within a few feet. Turns out they’re both spider enthusiasts. So I got a short master class in local spider identification.

One of which was the spiny-backed orb weaver. They’ve always been one of my favorite kinds, but I never knew the name, just the distinctive red and black flying saucer space alien appearance. For those happy w spider pix: spiny-backed orb weaver spider - Google Image Search.

Then I found a set of three spiders in stacked webs ~5 feet apart. So I got a pic of 3 different spider species all in a line.

Yaay spiders!

I was loading Top Green and Top White on the 300 today. Not horrible, except the one package car had 4 bulk loads, that all went on the same shelf. And of course one of the damages was a Home Depot box. I had my bacon and eggs when I got home. I put the laundry in, took a short nap, and now I’m watching preseason hockey.

ATTICA! ATTICA! ATTICA!

No one’s peed on me yet, but one time Lucrezia D. Hellcatt hornked on Maggie Wonderbeagle.

Wolfpack is nuking the Cambell Camels 56-7 at the moment. UNC lost, now I just need Incarnate Word(Team of Irrational Hatred) to lose to make my joy complete.

Hope the cold loses the fight, Taters

Sorry about your friend’s wife, Pilot.

Both mine are on high traffic streets, and the new one is in high traffic center.

OMFG, Sur La Table has a deviled aig ornament!

Howdy Y’all! My DAWGS beat the Kaintucky kittykats. I am happy. The cake and a pan of chawklit pee-kahn brownies got made. A box of brownie mix was in front of the cake mix, so I took that as a sign. OYKW is extremely happy about his unexpected treat. I watched the game with my iPad out on the back porch whilst quaffin’ some beerverages and got slightly snockered. Glad I baked this mornin’. A little snooze in the recliner made it all better.

BrightTree your story reminded me of a dawg (mutt) we had when I was a kid. His name was Pookie (sis named him) and he peed on my next to oldest brother on said brother’s 21st bday. Just walked up to bro and lifted his laig. Bro was not amused. The rest of us were rofl.

BBBoo I am cheerin’ on your ‘Huskers. Hope the conference went well.

MOOOOOM I saw the video and pics on the book of faces. Looks like a good happy fun time for Otis and Trevor. Bet they sleep well tonight.

Taters hope you are over the ick soonest.

Pilot hope it works out for gf and you tonight.

VanGo glad Peach had a successful day at the park.

Cookie shocked indeed! Hope they get the a/c fixed soonest.

doggio the idea of a wolfpack and camels playin’ tackleball amuses me greatly. :wolf::camel:

I’m sorry about your friend, pilot. Cancer sucks.

Yay! I’m glad she has someplace to socialize.

That’s one of the reasons that I’m going to dump my new printer. To scan, you have to use a phone app. Shoot, if I have to go through my phone, I may as well just photograph whatever it was and send it to Flickr, which is where I would have to send it anyway to access it on my desktop. I’m cruising Marketplace now for a simpler model.

Awwwww!

Got the towels washed, dried and put away, then just practiced RDOS for the rest of the day. Supper was a mishmash of leftovers, but still good. Now for more chillage.

@dogbutler I’m not sure the deviled aigs are the most horrific of the set. The deep dish pizza and the oysters are pretty scary too.

My TJs is middle sized and parking is variable. During winter when our local population swells by ~75-100%, it’s a total zoo. And they all drive and park like New Yorkers / New Jersyites because they are. It’s much more tolerable (read OK-ish at off-peak days/times) during off season when the population declines by half.

OTOH, it’s just across the street from my building so I can walk there & back in just a couple minutes. If I’m willing to brave jaywalking 50mph traffic on a boulevard with 3 lanes plus turn bays going each way. If it’s busy or I’m feeling chicken, walking the couple hundred feet down to the corner with traffic lights and cross walks then the same distance back up to TJ’s isn’t too awful, but still, that direct route is soooo seductive. Screeeech Hoooonnnnk!

Winn-Dixie is a major southeastern groc chain based in Jacksonville. Who has sold most (all?) of their FL stores to Aldi. The conversion of individual stores is just getting underway. So our entire region is losing one of our two mainstream groc stores, but we’ll now have a bunch more Aldis in absolutely cavernous spaces with huge parking lots.

I’ve always viewed TJ’s and Aldi as similar: quirky products for cheap, but mostly snacks. Not a place to actually buy more than 10% of a full week’s groceries. For sure TJ’s officially pushes quirky & quality & sometimes organic, whereas Aldi pushes cheap, cheap cheap, but still good enough.

The idea of a big Aldi is intriguing, but I’m not in favor of the loss of the only major groc chain competitor to Publix. Publix is already famous for everyday high prices, and once they have no effective competition it won’t be long until the gouging really gets going.

Thank you. And thanks to all upthread for your good wishes.

One of the things that sucks about cancer in particular is by the time the poor long-suffering patient dies, it’s a great relief for everyone, including them. Which really messes with everyone and everything about the situation and the grief and the recovery.

There are no good ways out of this life, but some are distinctly better or worse than others.

Congrats on your fairly low effort day and time spent RDOSing.

As to me …
Beach was nice, albeit the surf was up enough that the lifeguards didn’t want any swimming, just shallow wading or surfing w a board. Spiders were out in force as explained above. I got my daily dose of UV, and have been home RDOSing since. Food should be next, but that sounds effortful.

GF called to vent. Hubby has started open economic warfare, which will backfire badly as they’re rounding the final turn towards mediating an agreement on how much she gets. Meanwhile her 30-ish son has gone into total snit mode when he found out, more or less accidentally, that I exist. So of the three men in her life, two are actively trying to drive her batty. Looking at the bright side, that makes it real easy for #3 me to look like a hero: just don’t be a turd.

OTOH, after listening to 90 minutes of repetitive venting on the phone, she’s fried and I won’t see her until tomorrow. But at least that’s almost certainly going to actually happen. I knew some of this was coming with the territory when I first met her and learned about her not-yet-divorced status. So it’s par for my course. Unwelcome, but not unexpected.

I just keep reminding both of us that she’s getting closer to the final offramp for all this every day.

Cheers! It being just past 7pm, it’s time for food of some nature.

Waves at everyone. Today was spent stitching and listening to a book. I’m feeling slightly guilty about it, though. The library in town hasn’t had library cards to give to people for a while and they told me to go to Logan and get one.

That hasn’t happened, so today I went online and pulled up Libby for the Yavapai system and got a book there. The guilt will stop me from doing that again, Tuesday I’ll go to the library here and in Logan if needed.

Have you ever held your mouth closed so hard you pee your pants? That’s what I did the my baby sister sprayed pee on Dad’s face when he was changing her diaper. He was outraged, girls don’t do that sort of thing!!!

I’m glad you are doing so well and hope you are back at 100% soon.

It sounds like everyone had fun.

So…where are you throwing the walnuts? Do you have a bad neighbor or something?

That is a shock. I’m glad they are starting to take the HVAC issues seriously, you folks are paying too much to not have a comfy home.

I still have VBC’s cardboard box. It holds cat toys and memories.

I hope your arm isn’t too sore after the shots. I had both shots in my right arm, which is the one with the torn rotator cuff so I couldn’t tell if the ache was vax or normal.

I’m so sorry. Cancer just sucks.

Works the same with restaurants. Go between the rush hours, we’re retired, we can adjust our schedules easier than the working stiffs.

I hope its just something minor, have you had your RSV shot yet? I’ve heard that’s been going around again this year.

Break a leg! I hope you made at least one person think.

Imgur
Otis is pooped out!

And both dogs are signed up for training classes at PetSmart in 2 weeks. That will be an adventure for sure.

Daughter’s crew stayed here for Chinese for supper. They’ve gone home now and all is quiet.

Oh, and I saw today that the grocery store that had been (I think) Pantry Pride, then (I know) Shoppers, then McKay’s then Shoppers is now going to be Weis. Wonder how long they’ll last? I’m wondering if that store is haunted or cursed or something.

Anyway, time to wind down…

Howdy Y’all! Decided to pop back for a couple more comments.

doggio that deviled aig ornament is just wrong. However if I still put up a tree, I would be tempted due to the tackiness of it.

BBBoo yay for your ‘Huskers! Hope you got to watch and cheer.

Pilot so sorry for the loss of your friend’s wife. Cancer sucks!

Good evening all. Soccer kept me occupied until 2pm, and then spent 3-5pm at the gym so am well-exercised. Had a big bowl of Pasta to replace all the calories I used up and will probably turn in early again as I am starting to feel it now. Weather was perfect, a few clouds and the high was 82F.

And scrolling through 27 messages…

lily, thanks for the advice. I’ll be with a group of travel friends so I’m sure some of them are planning the same thing. Need to make sure I arrive a couple days early. Any ideas for Nice, France? (that’s where my trip will end)

Cookie, glad they responded quickly on the AC, I suspect they were inundated with grumpy patrons.

BBBoo, I’m sure your talk knocked 'em dead (then again, maybe not the best idiom to use…). And the Cornhuskers were soooo close…

FCM, glad to hear your Mom is out of the hospital, hope the rehab goes well. And thanks for the video, glad the two dogs get along with each other so well. Hope the tandem training works for both of them.

Taters, rooting for you in the Cold vs. Taters match.

Pilot, my condolences to your and your pal on the loss of his wife and the rememberances of yours. No one knows of how they will pass on (until it is known) but cancer is one way I hope I can avoid (my goal is to be shot by a jealous boyfriend at age 98…). I hope he can restart his life as you are now doing. And you can Yaay spiders all you want, just keep them at a distance from me. Hope the final settlement of GF’s divorce helps get her son back on track.

Oopsie, I really do need to get my driveway and sidewalks power-washed, just to lazy to contact anyone. Hope the multi-plan day went well. And continuting best wishes for Wife BFF.

VanGo. glad Ms Peach got a workout and I guess you did too, you walnut-tosser…

swampy, I think the words “chocolate pecan brownies” added 50 calories to my diet just thinking about them…so of course i cannot stop thinking about them…

Pilot, no Winn-Dixie’s near me, it’s mostly Kroger, Publix and Wal-Mart wrasslin’ for my food budget. I visited the new Aldi’s this week, may have to give it another look if prices keep getting higher…

JtC,

These days I’m more worried about peeing my pants for old-guy reasons than comic effect…

And that’s about all the energy I have left. Will watch some queued-up You Tubes until I get sleeply enough then off to Slumberland. See y’all on Sunday.

In my view, you buy ingredients at Aldi and food at TJ’s. Sure, there’s some overlap, but you’ll find more stuff that you can just heat up at TJ’s.

That sounds like H.G.Hill / Piggly Wiggly / Cee Bee’s / Piggly Wiggly / Cash Saver two towns back. HGH and PW had the same local owner, who later bought the Cash Saver franchise.

I messed around with a plate die that hasn’t seen much use in the several years that it’s been in my collection and came up with a Halloween card from it. The witch isn’t exactly in scale, but she was cute.
