I mean, seriously, for Republicans to bring up trading on your name given how Ivanka and Jared have been treated is, essentially, parody. Heck, George W. Bush traded on his name to get out of serving overseas, to get the Rangers, and so on.

I’m wondering what the reaction here would be if Don Trump Jr had serious drug habits, complete with pictures of him snorting coke off the ass on a prostitute, turned out to have shady 80,000/mo contracts with companies in China or Russia, was being investigated for tax evasion for trying to hide the connections, and it was pretty clear that he got the jobs not because of his skills, but because of his proximity to power. Imagine that he had traveled to China on Air Force One to a business meeting and introduced his dad to his partners in China, who were connected to Chinese State intelligence.
I’m sure everyone here would assume he was innocent until proven guilty, and that it was irrelevant anyway because he wasn’t the one elected President, and absent a ‘smoking gun’ showing Pres Trump was changing policy to help him, that it would be beyond the pale to suggest that Pres Teump had done anything wrong.

If the Trump children weren’t working in the the White House and in business with the President, I wouldn’t care what he did, what he was charged with, and whether he was convicted or not. It really would be a Billy Carter type of situation.
I say this as someone who loves his adult children, but wouldn’t want to be brought down by their scandals.
Could I trade what Trump actually did with his feckless spawn for this narrative?
One of the things that simply has to be included in this conversation – and I referenced it above – is that now-famous call between Trump and Zelensky – the one where Trump blackmailed Ukraine (a US ally in conflict with Russia) with refusing to convey promised military aid ($) unless Zelensky cooperated in a clandestine and shitty effort to fabricate information that would cast Joe Biden – honestly or dishonestly – in an unfavorable light.
So … yeah. There was that.
Where’s the equivalent piece in your hypothetical ? Do you really feel comfortable excluding this kind of thing from the whole Hunter Biden conversation ?

Don Jr is an active part of the administration. The corruption is not comparable. Your continual “both sides” nonsense remains a joke. Only one side is tolerating and supporting corruption and attempts at overturning democracy. There’s nothing remotely comparable on the Democratic side.
Don Jr’s drug habits would be irrelevant as to whether he commited a crime. I’ve seen some videos of him recentely and it looks like he was on something, but I don’t presume it is true. Maybe he had too much coffee or had not slept. I have seen some posters he stating fairly definitively that he was on coke. This is wrong.
If he was being investigated for tax fraud, I’ll admit that because of my bias against the Trump family and shady deals (and there have been many) that I might have, not ASSumed that he was guilty, but probably would have believed it likely. But I would not state that he was guilty without seeing evidence of it. If he had gone to China to make business deals, Ivanka went to China on official governent business and used the opportunity to get patent deals from the Chinese. But it’s not illegal. As for getting a job he was not qualified for, how the hell is Jared a senior advisor on the middle east because he read a few books? This happens all around the country and the world, children of the rich and/or famous get jobs every day. It’s not right, but it’s not illegal.
As far as suggesting that Trump was complicit in any of your scenario, again I might have been biased. And again, that bias would not be without reason, but it would be wrong. Trump despising Dopers, can you honestly say you would not have felt the same way? That you would not have been at least 80% sure Trump was involved? Past behavior and shady deals don’t prove guilt in crimes under investigation. And I would not have stated, and I don’t believe that most dopers woud have, that Trump was guilty without seeing evidence of it. Not only is there no evidence against Joe Biden, he’s not even under investigation.
Just overheard Slimy Sean Hannity in the other room, complaing about how ALL media except FOX is ignoring the Hunter Biden scandal. What he really means is that they are not featuring it all day long. As far as I know, the only “story” here is that the investigation is continuing, started in 2018. But the “failing” NYT, to use Trump’s words, isn’t covering it. Where can I go to find out just how many times the NYT and other outlets have covered the story? I looked for Nexus on my Google maching but didn’t get anywhere, I think I am misremembering. Nexus-Lexis pops into my mind but that is leading nowhere.
Yeah, my initial reaction is “Ok, so that’s nowhere near what his dad did in showing he’s unfit for government. Let’s hear what he has to say.”
I do so love a good “In this hypothetical I just made up, you’re all a bunch of hypocrites!” argument.
What would the Republican reaction be if Don Jr had done all of that? Probably to talk about Hunter Biden more.
Since we know conservatives don’t actually care about rooting out corruption, we know that it doesn’t matter to them what Hunter Biden did or didn’t do; just like it didn’t matter what was actually in Hillary’s emails, or what policy changes could have improved the outcome in Benghazi, or what specific version of his birth certificate Obama produced. Obama = illegitimate. Benghazi = traitors. Hillary = lock her up. The goal here is to just keep up the association for consumers of conservative media that Biden = corrupt. Keep talking about it. Say those two words in the same sentence over and over again until it becomes the truth.
As today’s ‘conservatives’ have proven time and time again, it’s always easiest to lie to oneself.
So, my Trumper friends are eating up the Hunter Biden stuff and are still stuck on Barisma. After one particular rant I said, “Let me get this clear. If the child of the VP used his family connections to secure a job with some company and get paid for a job his was wholly unqualified to do, that would be wrong?” “You’re goddamn right it would be wrong!” “So, what about the Trump clan getting jobs in the White House?” “That’s OK - its IN America” Seriously. This is the way that they think.
So, copy this and throw this on their FB feeds and see what happens, lol. The USSC decision is causing the GOP-Deplorable Alliance to fracture, so anything we can do to assist this is worthwhile:
