Well, my recent move to Lexington, Kentucky did not work out. The job market (for me) was not favorable, I had to evacuate my temporary quarters hurriedly and unexpectedly, so I returned to Metro Detroit to call upon the graciousness of friends & family to keep a roof over my head - kudos to my ex for taking me in, helping me however she could AND not being a bitch in the meantime. Employment opportunities have not changed, and moreover, I no longer feel home here. I really enjoyed and took well to Southern culture; so based on perceived employment opportunities and the significant presence of cultural institutions…
I’ve decided to move to Huntsville, Alabama.
Based on the on-line classifieds, Huntsville presents a respectable number of opportunities for someone with only an Associates degree and a less than stellar work/credit history. I’m not going to qualify for a security clearance and I’ve no experience or qualifications for medical field. There does seem to be a significant number of service industry positions available, all the research I’ve been doing indicates a robust & growing economy.
Are there any Huntsville Dopers willing to share their personal observations about the local economy & employment opportunities? Anything else I should know about Huntsville and the surrounding area?

I mean specific like what is your degree in and stuff like that. You don’t have to send me your shoe size.
Also, do you know what areas of town you want to live in or do you need help with that kind of stuff too? I know some of the people I used to correspond and work with in Huntsville (other branches of our office) lived in Madison and it seems to be a growing, up and coming part of Huntsville. However, I don’t know what your situation is like but I got the impression I wouldn’t be able to afford to live there.
I’ll ask my boyfriend if he has any suggestions about what the criminal side of town is and what apartment complexes to look into.

Finally - why Huntsville? Did you close your eyes and drop a pin on a map or was there something specific you were moving towards?

The economy is going well here. BRAC is moving in quite a few people into the area which has kept the house market from tanking and the employment rate is pretty good.
