Hydroxycut safe?

I have a few acquaintances whom I know use a substance called Hydroxycut in addition to regular muscle training and occasional long-distance running. It seems to work well for them (at cutting out fat while helping build muscle) but they have commented that it, and this is a direct quote, “tears you a new one.” I didn’t ask what this meant, but I was wondering if this supplement is a suitable addition to a fat-minimizing muscle-toning plan. Thanks in advance.

Oh, and here’s a link to the official Hydroxycut page:

First of all, the website doesn’t say what the product contains. Second, if you read what it says, it claims that you’ll lose 10lbs in eight weeks if you stick to a 2000 calorie diet combined with a moderate exercise regime. So basically, they are claiming that their product is a effective as a sugar pill. Can’t be that good.

Nobody?

So what’s Tapioca? Chopped liver?

Without even knowing what’s in the pills, based on what they say they’ll do, the pills can be completely inert and still deliver the goods. Why bother? Save yourself some money, go on a 2000 calorie diet, and engage in moderate exercise.

Good call guys. I’ll tell my buddies they’ve been taking a placebo. Can’t wait to see the looks on their faces.

Tapioca is not chopped liver.
Give the guy a break, we simu-posted. Incidentally, simu-posting (combined with a 2000 calorie diet and moderate exercise) is an effective weight loss tool.

The label says what is in it. I think it is a lot of caffeine which will decease appetite. there is something else (forgot what b/c I don’t have a label handy) that increases metabolism. Trouble is, it dehydrates too so if you get dehydrated and start working out, well that can’t be that good can it? Besides it is pretty easy to lose water weight but it won’t stay off. Once you rehydratem you are right back to gaining the weight back.

It says that it has Garcinia cambogia extract in it. A couple of papers from the non-goofhead journal world:

A person I work with takes it. It makes her shake a little bit, probably because of all the caffeine.

I believe that Hydroxycut is often mentioned as being one type of stimulant that is believed to have been linked to the death of Steve Bechler, the Baltimore pitcher, in spring training this year.

I’m pretty sure Hydroxycut is ephedrine. (Man, how many ephedrine-related threads am I going to be involved in?). Read up on the risks, and so forth.

Most of these OTC diet/exercise pills are ephedrine plus several other supplements (hence the “stack”). Many contain caffeine, guarana, various vitamins, etc. The ephedra is the “active” ingredient, though. Its a stimulant that has fairly potent physical properties and fairly weak mental ones. Definitely presents some risk, as numerous deaths have occured while people were exercising on it.

That was the old Hydroxycut. There is a new formula which is called Advanced Formula Hydroxycut. It’s pretty much the same thing, minus the ephedra.

And, FTR, I was taking the old Hydroxycut religiously about five months ago in an effort to look more “cut.” I was lifting weights 4 times a week, and doing cardio 2 times a week, with 1 rest day.

I wasn’t acheving the results I wanted, so I decided to try Hydroxycut. I bought a 240 pill bottle, and took it just like the label prescribed.

I went through the whole bottle in about 6 weeks (46 days to be exact). I noticed I was getting somewhat bigger, but not “cut.” I bought a second bottle on the 47th day, and continued the regimen.

Went through the whole 240 pill bottle again, same results. I was on a 3,000 calorie diet, which consisted of high protein, low fat, low carb foods.

So, it seems I was doing everything correctly. Anyway, moral of the story is, Hydroxycut didn’t work for me.

Thanks again guys. Looks like the “old-fashioned” way is best after all. Might as well not feel like shit while you’re working out.

The state of Missouri (and others, I think) is actually suing the company responsible for Hydroxycut:

I tried Hydroxycut, ( the stuff with ephedra in it). It reduced my appetite quite a bit. I was always a big eater and when I was on this stuff I could pretty much skip lunch and not have to make up for it at dinner time. I lost the weight I wanted to. I only took fifty of them over the course of about three weeks, and lost twelve pounds. I used less then the recommended dosage because the stuff make me jittery enough without taking more.

I managed to lose 30lbs in about 4 months using Xenadrine (with Ephedrine) which is a product very similar to Hydroxycut. I tried Hydroxycut about 3 years ago and managed to lose about 5lbs, but it came right back on plus more. I would definitely recommend
Xenadrine though. I never took it like the bottle said. I would take 2 in the morning and then I would eat lunch and dinner (no breakfast). I wouldn’t be hungry so managed to eat less. I also excercise. I have managed to keep the weight off since December, but when I feel my old eating habits creeping up on me, I do the Xenadrine thing for a week and lose the couple of pounds I might have gained. I would definitely recommend it, but don’t take the recommended dosage…especially if you’re a woman. It will most probably make you jittery (caffeine).

I believe the old Hydroxycut used to work on the Ephedrine, Caffeine, Aspirin stack which is a known fat burner. Now that they’ve taken the ephedrine out, I doubt that any of these pills will do much (but the placebo effect can always work!)

I was on Ephedrine-based Xenadrine, and very pleased with the results. Then I tried the Hydroxycut just to mix it up a bit, and it’s not as effective, but you become even more moody (well, I did).

So, another vote for Xen (w/ eph) over Hydrox
