What is the role of government?
The federal government has expanded so much in the past century, mostly after the New Deal and World War II. Most people take for granted that the U.S. should consider spending taxpayer pay money for research into the cure of disease.
Now, personally, I want to see stem cell research expanded. I care more to cure disease than for a clump of cells that could become a human.
However, if the people who are so upset by Bush’s decision were to invest in stem cell research themselves, maybe they could make a difference without any of this controversy.
The thing is, people are asking for taxpayers’ money for something that many people have problems with. That’s the thing – if you ask for the money, you stand the possibility of being turned down.
If someone began a stem cell research foundation, I probably would give some of my money for it.
Here’s what Bush should do: He should send us back some more of the taxes we paid and tell us to decide whether or not to use for stem cell research, or anything else, for that matter.
We’re not arguing whether this research is legal. If we were, I’d totally agree with Stoid’s argument in this thread. We’re arguing about using taxpayer money on this research, when many people have a problem with it.
