I admit it! Tonight I gave in and indulged in the unspeakable vice! *sob*

I never cared much either way about calf’s liver. Don’t love it, don’t hate it.

Now chicken livers, there’s something I occasionally have wicked cravings for. Cooked a little pink with bacon and sherry. Mmmmmmm.

But the best thing is kreplach. Little pasta dumplings stuffed with delicately spiced liver and onions, simmered in chicken broth and topped with a little parsley and sour cream. Heavenly comfort food.

I think I know what I’m going to make this weekend.

You poor, sick bastard. There are programs to help with this sort of thing, you know.

I’m so glad people don’t think you MUST eat liver anymore. It’s really quite a disgusting food, but when I see it the supermarket, I do like to hold it up to where my liver is. I do the same with kidneys and tongues.

I like liver sometimes too. Not all the time, but sometimes I crave it.

I figure if Portnoy has no complaints, neither do I.

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!
Mushrooms and onions!!!
Yumm!

Oh, man, Weirddave, you just had to start in on that, didn’t you? Now I can’t get it out of my head… I want liver. Slightly floured, in bacon grease and onions, with mashed potatoes on the side… man, I was hoping to avoid the grocery store tonight. And now I’m huuuuuunnnnnggggrrrryyyyyyy…

Liver has always been my favorite meal. Dredged in breadcrumbs and sauted in butter (not overdone – just cooked through) . . . ambrosia.

But I can do you one better. My favorite accopaniment to liver is a big heaping helping of lima beans. Canned or frozen.

I refuse to eat another creature’s poison filter.

Now there is someone who knows how to have a good time at the grocery store! I’d go shopping with you anytime.

I’ve never actually eaten liver.

My mom cooked it once, for the dog. I smelled it, and it kinda made me queasy. My grandma used to make it, an my mom hated it. But my grandma was an old-school-eat-what’s-on-your-plate-there’s-children-starving-in-China kinda woman.

My mom swore she’d never eat liver again, and she’d certainly never force it on her children. And she held fast to that.

Growing up, no one in my family liked liver the way my mother cooked it. She would cook it till it was like tough shoe leather, which no amount of catsup could render palatable. A few times it was so bad, even my dad would overrule my mom and not make us eat it. A few years later I discovered Hot Shoppes Cafeteria. The way they cooked liver made it one of my favorite meals. It was dusted with flour and sauteed with bacon and grilled onions. I would eat it with a side of their equally delectable macaroni and cheese, green beans, warm yeasty roll and a piece of any flavor of cream pie. Alas, about 1 year ago, the last Hot Shoppes Cafeteria in my area closed up. I guess I’ll have to cook this meal myself. I hope that Hot Shoppes has their recipe online.

Second City, 1970s. 'Nuff said.

You just described the exact selections I make when I go to Luby’s for liver and onions.

Liver & Onions, Side of Mashed Potatoes, Mushroom Gravy! Deeeeelishious!!

BTW, the stuff the French serve ain’t too bad either!

urk

I loathe liver. When I was 14, I was sent to diet camp where we were served liver for dinner every Wednesday night. I’d go to the trash can, pick the liver up with my fork, and throw it out. I’d sooner go hungry than eat it.

The Buntyn Restaurant, established 1920. Memphis, Tennessee. Liver and onions, with their famous dinner rolls. This experience ranks up there with watching the sun rise from atop Mount Fuji. Be sure to have cornbread with honey for dessert.

I aso love chicken livers in certain Cajun rice dishes, but whenever I call the grocery store to ask if they sell chicken livers, the guy on the phone says knowingly, “Going fishing?” No, I am not eating “bait.”
