Like, because her death is totally fucking irrelevant to the mature man’s qualifications for public office?
How very generous of you. No doubt your prescience will allow you to spot the next 12-year-old killer who’s destined to become a leading Democrat and you’ll abjure all criticism of his bloodlust?
Isn’t the whole “Don’t shoot toward your buddies” rule kind of universal?
I think that rule was established when the first caveman learned to throw a rock.
Yu can’t hold a 12 year old to the same level of responsibilty as a 65 year old. In the case of the former, you actually have to question the responsibilty of whoever handed the child the gun.
Not an apt comparison. Kennedy at the time wasn’t criticized for simply getting into a car accident. He was criticized for not summoning help until the next morning, after he had had some shuteye and talked to a whole bunch of people, including his lawyer.
Chappaquiddick wasn’t a simple accident, and you really shouldn’t portray it as such.
I plan to be MUCH more civil than the Pubbies were when they treid to impeach Clinton over a blowjob.
That said: Out newest Olympic winter sport: Dick Cheney’s Ski Shooting Event. Contestants ride skimobiles, stop at various locations, and shoot at quails or … just anyone who happens to be nearby.
Huh? Maybe others (Martin Hyde in dismising the ranch owner), but certainly not me. I’m not anti-hunting, anti-Western, or even anti-gun. I’m far to the side of gun-rights compared with most of this board, I generally support NRA positions and the NRA itself, I hated Bowling for Columbine, I’d like to go hunting sometime when I’m older and I’ve got the time, and I live and love the West.
That said, Cheney was being a dumbfuck to not look at what he was shooting at before shooting it.
I know that hunting is a very, very safe sport statistically, but it does require care and caution to avoid serious accidents.
Mr. Moto, comparing the actions of a 12 year old to a 65 year old is asinine. Just admit, Cheney made a stupid and pittable error. Apparently the victim did as well. It doesn’t really reflect on his ability to be VP, I’m not calling for his resignation, I’m just pointing out that he did something really stupid and pitworthy. If you’re pro-gun, pit him for setting back your cause.
I was referring to your rather lofty assertion that you would never politicize a tragedy or jump on the pile on just because someone of opposing politics was involved. Such is obviously not the case. So how about we knock it off with the self righteous moral superiority, hmm?
No, there really aren’t any parallels. One one hand you have people who will defend a despicable individual despite the questionable nature of the entire incident and likely coverup, and on the other hand, Mr. Cheney accidentally injured a hunting companion.
Oh geez, now I’ve got a mental picture of a group of people trying to sight quail with glocks. And isn’t it funnier if the people you’re imagining are secret service?
I certainly don’t think this had any bearing on the races in 1952 and 1956.
Thing is, though, the political system has changed so much that not only wasn’t this an issue back then, it was never mentioned at all, near as I can find out. Certainly no Republican of any stature made it a campaign issue, nor were there any whispering campaigns about this.
Today, though, there certainly are people seeking to take political advantage of this accident.
If a politician today had shot a kid in his youth, the whole world would know about it. In some ways that means we are much better informed, but it also means we are dealing with a far more adversarial system where everything is politicized and pressed for maximum gain.
Little Nemo, what I’m saying is that even when you are using your gun safely, there are small risks in these sports. The best you can hope to do is to minimize these risks in the actions that you take. Good hunters and shooters remember this always, and never presume that they are safe.
