I’ve taken the leap and am making my first real foray into the world of computer music … my only previous experience is pokin’ and peekin’ some sounds on my Commodore 64, but that’s it.
I just bought iLife for myself and am starting to use Garageband. I got the package secondhand from a friend who didn’t really care for it. Problem is he can’t find the manual. So I’m fumbling around with Garageband, and managed to make a crappy 30-second song with a couple of the Apple loops. I’ve never used a music program before, so this is all new to me.
So on to the question - I downloaded a few samples, but when I try to import them into Garageband, it says that only Apple Loop format files will be visible in the browser window. So I’m stumped. How do I go about inserting one of these samples into a track in my song? Pressing record and then playing the sample so my external mic could catch it worked, but the sound quality seems like it’s coming out of a can that way.
BTW, I’m running an iMac G4, OS 10.2.8, if that helps with any solutions.
What file format are the samples? According to Macworld , you can drag audio files to the Tracks column to import them. The article states that this works for AIFF, WAV and MP3 files. No support for AAC files :smack: ?
Oh ya, it lets me drag the samples to the tracks column, and it supposedly imports them. But then it says that only sounds in Apple Loop format will show in the loop browser. Basically, they’re there, but I don’t know where. That’s the problem. If I can’t see them in the browser, then where else could they be?
To make loops you need the Soundtrack Loop Utility, part of AppleLoops SDK . GarageBand uses the same format as Soundtrack. Detailed instructions are in June '04 MacAddict, pg 68.
(Sorry, couldn’t find the article online).
