I am appalled

I KNEW IT!

Have a temper tantrum?

Your google-fu must be extremely advanced - if I was looking for the “acorn” phrase I never would have thought to search “I went camping”

But a good find either way.

I am not surprised that a moderator says stupid things and is annoyed by that which she should be grateful for.

I am not surprised that some mods have made some capricious and, well, idiotic decisions (along with more decent ones). Usually though they are of no real consequence since many warnings are garnered before real action is taken.

I am surprised that anyone is willing to be a mod. (Must be one helluva coffee cup!)

But I cannot even fathom why someone who holds the community in contempt would even hang here at all, let alone volunteer to moderate. And I am grateful that there are those willing to take on the task, even if they do not do so with perfection.

Obviously YMMV.

Ultimately, Who gives a fuck?

Huh?

What outrage? What offense?

A small albeit undeserved and uncalled for snarky comment of no import to anyone if only it had not been cc’ed. If you think that’s “outrage” you’ve lived a very sheltered existence.

I can.

I’m not offering any opinion about this specific case - just the observation that there are all kinds of personalities in the world, and it’s certainly possible there could be a mod at a board that holds the members in contempt but gets something out of being a mod.

Again - I’m not saying that’s the case here - just performing an analysis of all reasonable possibilities.

picunurse, you’re the one who decided that this insult was something for the community to be concerned about, and now some of us are going to think that the resolution of that insult is the community’s concern as well. I guess I’m surprised that you think that view is not only incorrect, but a basis for you to (ironically, in context) be insulting.

Actually, the statement about not being able to say whether twickster considers the matter closed as well suggests to me that there was no such resolution. My impression is that picunurse threw the apology back and sent additional chastisement twickster’s way.

That’s not what was said.

It’s bad enough, don’t be piling on and making stuff up.

Nobody’s namecalling here. Or should be.

Huh? The hall monitor has the ability to get you in trouble. The guy at Subway does not. Of course what the hall monitor thinks of you is more important.

The problem is that twickster is in a position to do something about her feelings. It isn’t even hypothetical. We’ve seen this attitude roll over into her moderating. And, as silly as it seems to some of you, some of us care about this message board.

In fact, finding out that she holds this level of contempt for posters makes me feel better at how much contempt I’ve felt from her towards me and a few other posters I like.

I think this is a bit harsh elbows.

Even a blind hog finds an acorn now and then. And with the common occurrence of the blind leading the blind, trained ones have been known to lead a blind squirrel to a nut.

I saw a blind dog find a bone once. It was buried in the flesh of a blind hog’s hock. Completely hilarious to everyone but the squirrel.

You’re right.

Whew… that was long and ugly. I don’t think I need any human contact/interaction for at least a month or two…

Perhaps this adage maybe appropriate here: " 猿も木から落ちる。" (Saru mo ki kara ochiru) “Even monkeys fall from trees.”

With that, I say: May Dopers be vicious at times but only lovingly, Amen.

What we can know for sure:

in 100% of the Mods’ private correspondence that we have seen exposed in the past few days, a Mod spoke condescendingly, contemptuously and dismissively of a poster who is generally considered to be a benign Doper, not one of the “Usual Suspects,” not a chronic complainer or jerk, just a decent longtime member of this “community.”

AND

The Mods’ response to this characterization was NOT to chastise the Mod who made the characterization, NOT to express outrage that such disparagement was made, NOT to tell said Mod that she was out of line, etc.

SO

we can safely conclude that in the many private Mod exchanges that we DON’T get to read that posters are routinely disparaged, AND that posters who ARE on the Mods’ hit list get a particularly vicious variety of this disparagement-- meanwhile the public scolding we are all accustomed to concerns the need for a civil tone, backing off from personal attacks, commenting on the post rather than the poster.

If there were some kind of SD FOIA, and we could access the Mods’ private correspondence, I think it would confirm the most extreme positions taken by the most hardcore paranoid Dopers about the explicit conspiracies by the Mods against them, personally, ever expressed.

It’s more generational than anything else. “Blind hog” goes back to at least 1883.
“Blind squirrel” is more a mid-20th centuy origin.

Remember: this is NOT a discussion of Mods’ disgraceful behavior. This is a discussion about folklore and colloquial expressions. Please stay on topic.

  1. This is a hijack of the existing thread and has nothing at all to do with the subject matter.
  2. AGAIN, if you have a digression about phrase origins, take it to GQ. That is not an appropriate subject for ATMB.

Not junior modding-just my personal opinion. Whatever.

When a person (poster, mod, or jaywalker)has acknowledged error and apologized, the mods do NOT continue to chastize, express outrage, yell at, scold, berate, or otherwise kick the dead horse in public.

When anyone makes a stupid mistake, and feels terrible about it, and apoligizes in public and in private, we accept that and move on.

Others, obviously, do not.

But you can’t blame people for that, it’s human nature and it’s not fair to get mad at us for it.

Pretend like it’s politics.

If a person got a nasty email (by accident) from their local mayor after pointing out a legitimate problem and took it to the media where it was played on the local news, then later the mayor issued an apology…would you really, honestly expect that to be the end of it? No news reports of it after that day?
Would you really expect people talking about it later to say:

Hey, did you hear about that thing with the mayor?
Yeah, he apologized so it doesn’t matter anymore, there’s nothing to talk about.

Or

Hey did you read that email the mayor sent to that lady?
No, but it doesn’t matter he apologized yesterday so you can stop talking about it now.

It simply doesn’t work that way.

I don’t really care one way or the other anymore (though I’ll keep following it if the conversation continues), but I don’t think it’s fair to be annoyed at people who want to hear the resolution or find out if anything happened because of it. We’re a curious people and we don’t just drop things just because you don’t feel like talking about them anymore (not you CK, you the general you).
And to be a bit more specific, I think people are more curious because it’s Twix.

Reported for nutty acorn modding.
