My great-uncle had a similar story. Growing up he had a huge crush on a girl in his class (this is the one room school house era of Saskatchewan), and was his first true love. She, however, married someone else, and it broke his heart. He remained a bachelor, “married to his farm”, basically until, when he was in his late 70s / early 80s, he met up with his old flame at a funeral for a mutual friend (I get the impression funerals are to old people what singles bars are to us), they caught up, he found out her husband had passed away some years ago, and he got married for the first time in his early 80s, and was the happiest guy you could imagine until he passed away about 5 or so years after. (Granted, he was pretty happy before hand, he was always one of my favourite uncles)
He was proof to me you could find love at any age.
