Anyway, I can’t see the OP as a monster since he knows that an attraction to children is incredibly wrong, and he wishes he weren’t this way. If he were trying to justify it, that would be one thing, but knowing that acting on this is inherently harmful makes him sympathetic, in my view.
I’m definitely more on the “pit St. Anger” side than “pit pduol” side (really? “Alerting the FBI” for someone who hasn’t even broken a law (well, not the law you’re alerting him for anyways) and lumping him iwth Cesario who has broken the law and is unrepentant about it). Should we report all the Dopers in a same-sex relationship now, where it’s illegal to do that? (Last I heard, correct me if I’m wrong, but “buggery” is still illegal in some states) Or are we just picking and choosing which crimes to report here?

There is a website called ‘child molestation prevention’ that tries to address this issue like adults (w/o fear mongering, rabid hatred, knight in shining armor syndrome, etc). Sexual abuse is probably the biggest public health crisis in the US today. And virtually nobody wants to act like an adult about it. People either want to ignore it, or react badly to it.
One of the aspects they work on is finding pedophiles who want to control their urges and getting them help so they do not hurt children. They have a list of therapists who work with clients with those urges and info about the laws in various states.
Listen, if you read any of my posts in the cesario threads, you will see that, not only am I a survivor of child sexual abuse, but I spoke out pretty strongly against cesario. So, I’m hardly an apologist for pedophiles.
I just think your level of hysteria does nothing to actually help stop real danger that pedophiles who are interested in acting out their desires might inflict. Not only is it very Boy Who Cried Wolf in the here-and-now, but it makes it just that much less likely that pduol would get the proper help that he needs.

Agreed. There are too many rapists/molesters out there who self justify. Who say that the woman may not have consented at first but she secretly wanted it. Or she was deep down asking for it. They simply don’t accept that what they did was really all that wrong. But at least we have someone who knows that this is a sickness, that to act could hurt someone. I think that’s something to be thankful for.
No, there are mental techniques for not thinking about something. They mostly involve redirection, consciously and repeatedly thinking of something else to the point you forget why you’re doing it, but zazen and other forms of meditation’s good too.

Further to this point: If you think your family physician would be open to it, you could go to him/her and speak in general of intrusive thoughts (a prime symptom of OCD) that you need help with, while not going into the details of what those thoughts are, or vaguely characterizing them as, say “Sudden intrusive memories that upset me.” Primary care physicians can prescribe the kinds of drugs Green Bean is speaking of, and other than recommending you see a psych professional, your PCP isn’t likely to want to explore what you’re thinking in any depth.
