I Am Not Okay With This (TV show)

Has anyone else checked out this brand new Netflix show? It just premiered today. I have already watched two episodes (they are only 20 minutes each, which is kind of cool) and I am completely hooked. I love the main character! She’s not exactly like Daria, but people who like that sort of female protagonist will I think dig this.

Also (mild spoiler that is part of the premise of the show) she has superpowers of the Jean Grey-before-Phoenix variety, and is just beginning to have this dawn on her when we pick up the story in the pilot.

Thanks to this thread I just started watching. So far, two episodes in, I love it!

Are you also using dictation software like Skald? Because I’m seeing the same object tags that show up in his posts. In case they don’t show on your computer, they are both before and after the “I have already watched […] and I am completely hooked” sentence.

Okay, I had a bad bout of insomnia last night so I managed to binge-watch the whole thing (not continuously - I’d watch an episode, try to sleep, then go back to it).

It’s so new that there isn’t a lot of commentary out there, but I tend to agree with what I’ve read - namely, that the two main characters, Sydney and Stanley, are wonderfully well drawn and played, Sydney’s mom occasionally has her moments, and the other characters are flat stereotypes (little brother Liam is particularly cliche; if he were any more spunky and sweet he’d explode).

Since Sydney and Stanley are almost always on screen, it’s overall great. I can’t wait to see where they go with the story line in season 2.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, it’s really good. The writing and character development really sets it apart. It does a great job of showing the contradictions and complexities of relationships.

Awesome!

BigT, I dictate a lot of what I post to my iPhone, not with any “software” but just with the basic iOS dictation function. I don’t see any tags though. Is this a problem for you?

I think the trailers and ads were waaaaaay more interesting than the actual show. I waited several months for this and all it felt like was a brief introduction to a character. The entire thing could have been an hour long show. Same tropey BS. Angsty teens, absent parents.

My 15 year old loved it though, so I guess that’s the target audience. The two main characters are great though, and the actors in those parts did an outstanding job.

Just watched the last two episodes yesterday. Absolutely loved it and want MORE!

Thanks for the tip.

Been enjoying it. But it is taking too long for her to learn how to control her powers.

I hope she learns soon.

I have watched six now. I thought it took a real dip in quality with the “Breakfast Club” homage. Where are these schools whose detention is totally unsupervised and allows the kids to traipse around the school (or for a couple to make out with each other)? I felt a strength of it previously was its realism in interpersonal relationships (obviously not in its metaphysics).

But I am intrigued by the revelations about her father’s powers and what happened to him in the military.

I’ve watched two episodes. It’s enough to make me interested in seeing more.

The fact that they used Captain Beefheart on the soundtrack makes it more appealing, though.

The music supervisor on the series has interesting and offbeat tastes that are not congruent with mine but are close enough to be interesting. At times they almost convey an impression of a period piece; but then there will be the occasional flatscreen TV or reference to Instagram to indicate that it is set in the present.

It’s not a big problem or anything. I was just curious to try and figure out the commonality. Skald also uses iOS dictation and has the same errors (and other posters have mentioned it, so I know it’s not just me), so it seems like it’s just something to do with that software and how it interacts with this board.

Ff you used any emoji or special characters before and after the sentence I mentioned, those may be ones that don’t work. If you didn’t, then I’m clueless.

I could talk more about what the object tag is and how it works (It’s part of Unicode.) but I don’t want to continue the distraction. If you don’t see the tags or anything else, then I guess there’s not much you can do about it.

Oh yeah, I’m on my laptop now and I see them. On the Chrome browser on my iPhone, they do not appear–and no, I wasn’t using any emojis or special characters. Huh, weird.

Just watched the finale. Holy SHIT.

I have to admit, my first reaction to that douchebro’s head exploding was to bust out laughing! I guess I’m a horrible person.

Now I’m definitely pretty excited for next season (if there is one–Netflix has been a lot quicker to cancel things the past couple years.

BTW, Echo & the Bunnymen’s “Killing Moon” most definitely *is *congruent with my musical tastes, as is Bryan Ferry’s “More Than This”. The Aztec Camera song was pretty cool as well.

It was pretty good after a slow start. The finish was really strong. I was wondering why Stanley was living in a strange Pushing Daisies/Edward Scissorhands world that existing in the present with the 70s-90s at the same time. The Breakfast Club Homage was fun.

So why was the Principal of all people running a detention without supervision? Just as silly as the Breakfast Club premise.

I agree with the strong Daria vibe for the main character. (Sydney)

Yup, except at times she comes across as more reticent than Daria.

Just watched it. I think it was closer to the “discovering your abilities” feel of an X-Men/New Mutants comic than most if not all of the TV/movie versions I’ve seen.

I haven’t watched it yet, but it just went on my watch list. Thank you for posting this.

You’re welcome, Sunny!

Good point. (Speaking of which, I saw a movie poster at the theater for “New Mutants” literally years ago. I wonder if that is ever going to be released?)

ETA: I know one person thought she was taking too long to develop the ability to control her powers, but these episodes are so short and mostly concerned with social aspects of her life, so I think it has been fine. Also the events of the finale depend on her not having very fine control, not to mention the backstory with her dad.
