Wow, that’s pretty terrible. I’ve lived here for years, and have never had any problems. But, friends of mine have similar stories, and they seem to be tied to particular neighborhoods. Not necessarily the worst neighborhoods, like North Denver or Englewood, but sometimes it just seems to be the character of the neighborhood.
No advice, I’m sorry to say. Car alarms and remote cameras are good, but unfortunately tend to be out of reach for us poor folk. Good luck, and my deepest sympathies.
The last time our car got broken into, in our driveway, we installed security lights. This was a year ago, and we’ve not had a problem since, except for one night last weekend.
Hubby and I got home from his dad’s house. It was Saturday night, about 11:30 or so. We were putzing around before going to bed, and hubby noticed the lights in front come on. He went outside and saw some kid walking down the street. Not that he could set off our lights doing that, you have to come about half way into our driveway for them to come on. He noticed that our neighbors across the street’s lights were on as well. He didn’t make chase or anything, just watched til he was a ways down and made sure our vehicles were secure.
The next morning, we were out talking to the across the street neighbors and the kid came up. They said all their stuff was in order. Hubby then went to the house a couple doors down. That neighbor’s car had been opened and gone through. It’s up for sale and the doors were unlocked as there is nothing of value in it, but still.
So we have some little punk going through the hood looking for stuff to take. Great. It just infuriates me that people think it’s ok to take what others work hard for, or wanton destruction of someone’s property. Seems to be on the rise in the Denver area and suburbs lately though.
Where my parents live, there’s a continual problem of kids/young adults smashing the mailboxes with baseball bats from a car. This has gone on for DECADES now.
It kinda makes you wish for indentured servitude for such actions, doesn’t it?
We live on Capitol Hill, 3 blocks from the Capitol (away from Colfax). We found out there was a rash of car thefts and window smashings on the 1300 block of Logan so we stopped parking there. Don’t know anybody who’s had a problem with window smashings on 1200 Logan. Our neighbor’s car got keyed during the March blizzard…I think people are just pissed off about the snow, maybe?
Lamar Mundane, there are some peacenik-type stickers on the back of the car, and an “All who wander are not lost” sticker, but those were all covered with snow when this happened. My bf is not native (he was born in Seattle) but he’s lived in Colorado for nearly all his life. He hates the Red Wings. He hates the Raiders.
Lynn, I think what makes me most angry is that I Just Don’t Understand Why people enjoy destroying other people’s property for no personal gain. I mean, if there were interesting things in the car to steal, I could maybe see it, but there wasn’t anything.
World Eater, the first smash was in February. It was not snowy out at the time.
We can’t afford a camera, and it wouldn’t really work anyway, as this street is extraordinarily difficult to park on (one way street, parking on one side, all apartments on this block) so we usually park a block or two away.
And no, the insurance my bf has does not cover this.
Today I’m just sad. That’s another $164 in the hole, for NO FUCKING REASON.
oh, and Anu? I do like Guster. I have their first album.
So, lissener, you’re saying that because I couldn’t come up with some clever thread title equivalent to “My rage burns with the fire of 1,000 suns” (which is basically what mine says, only more interestingly), it’s vague? There’s no “because” in that thread title, either.
I posted my thread because I was angry. I didn’t have to put WHY I was angry in my thread title. If you don’t like vague thread titles, don’t open the threads.
Dude, the same thing happened to me. Smashed window, nothing taken, parked right outside of my house, in a nice neighborhood.
Luckily for me, it was the smallest of windows on my car, and didn’t cost an astronomical amount to fix. It’s still a major sense of violation, though.
I suggest getting vandalism coverage on your insurance, with a low deductable. My insurance company sent someone to my office to fix the windshield while I was at work.
It’s a sucky situation nevertheless, but having a somewhat easy solution makes it a little easier to deal with.
