I’m sure this is an honor which she’ll remember for as long as she can.
I do remember the year that Miss Ohio, for her talent, did a belly dance routine. Whoa, it was really hot for the time. She’d had a very modest gown and swimsuit, with her hair up in a knot, for the dance it hung way down, and you saw a lot of jingly costume, and a lot of skin too. Not the usual talent for the time(At least twentyfive years ago)
It used to be, when Gary Collins hosted.
Some other choice bits from one of the Twitter users highlighted elsewhere online for his racist comments about Miss America:
Way to prove the point, dude.
My only comfort is that the Internet is forever, tempered by the knowledge that someone who ends up this way is probably surrounded by people who think like him, so he’ll never change (then again, the thought of him never really stepping into civilized society is a BIT comforting in of itself).
Is there any event, any event whatsoever, that doesn’t cause some idiots to send out stupid tweets? Why is the fact that something like this causes these jerks to twitter about it in a racist fashion even interesting? Thirty years ago we only had to listen to the people that could manage to get their message out in magazines or newspapers or on TV or radio. Now everybody gets their own platform to talk to the world. Ignore them. There are no more or less stupid, racist jerks than there ever were.
I’m sure you all think you’re being funny, and you mean no harm, but you’re not exactly helping.
What bugs me more than anything is that the racist idiots are jumping on this woman who was born in America, raised in America, educated in America, and has lived in America all her life. There is no way to be more American than Nina Davuluri.
Twitter is the modern day equivalent of scribbling on the walls of the bathroom stall. I’m not sure why anyone is surprised.
Y’know, I realized only recently that unlike Trump’s Miss USA/Miss Universe (where our girl competes as a separate country), in the (separate entity) Miss America competition there is a Miss Puerto Rico in the running. Now SHE would make for a perfect storm, since on top of the racist/supremacist garbage she would also get knocks over how “If it’s not a State it should not be in Miss America” from the stateside idiots AND over "Assimilated sellout w*e! If you want to be Miss America you should move, and anyway it’s wrong and imperialistic to call the US America" from the islandside idiots.
And in any case, twitter is the home of twits, that much has been clear all along.
They’re helping me laugh. That’s more than Miss America, any Miss America, ever did for me.
Except for the chick that made those anti-gay pro-God comments and it ended up she had a sex tape out there. That was pretty funny too.
That was Miss USA & actually it was some revealing photos, not a sex tape.
I animated them in my head. Close enough.
Oh, less, I should hope, simply because, while stupidity is eternal, racism is a thing now passe.
Yeah, but the stereotype is 20 years out of date. The stereotype now is they outsourced your job, or they’re a doctor.
She could have been born a cheeseburger.
You do not want to know what I am doing just now :dubious:
There’s nothing to help. Some percentage of the American population (any population, really) is made up of idiots. Nothing we can say is going to change that, so we may as well amuse ourselves.
TBF, the Dope’s mission statement is to fight ignorance, which tends to be a major component of idiocy. Though, I suppose mockery and shaming could be perceived as a weapon in that fight.
(though it is not altogether clear that registering on SDMB implies that one is signing up to fight alongside the foes of ignorance)
Meh. Wrhnic humor has a long tradition in the US.
So did minstrelry. Adding BUT AS A JOKE at the end of racism doesn’t make it any better.
