Let me join the chorus of those saying that the board has been much faster of late, and I appreciate the unpaid work going into making that happen. Thank you, mods and administrators!
I did my part.
And sometimes you get a little help from your friends…
It doesn’t seem that slow. After all, I always have more than one browser window open at a time, a book on hand. I let it wait, I take it leisurely.
I think the mods have been doing very well lately. It’s been slow at times, and if I go to read it over at the museum it often times out, but so?
Chill, techchick. Have a cookie.
I’m glad to see I’m not the only one on the boards that does not have a problem with slowness. I’ve often considered myself pretty lucky with the speed I can load pages. I wondered to myself why so many others were having trouble, so I kept reading the threads that explained what it could be or why it was happening to certain areas or at certain times. Just in case it decided to happen to me, as well.
I have had slowness at my place of business, but I know there it has to be because of our connection. I can time out repeatedly there, leave work at 5:00, get home at 5:30, fire up my home pc, and BINGO! Fast SDMB! Like it had been running on greased lightning all day. I only have a 56k modem at home, too.
I don’t really care if it’s slow at work. After all, I AM at work there. I can always be doing something work related.
I also have noticed it being faster (in my case, that means it’s really flying) the last couple of weeks. Even at work. So, I guess all I can really do is say thanks to the Mods and Admins for hurrying up what I already considered to be a kick-ass, smoothly running board.
Slow boards - hah!
When I logon at 0900 UK time, they close the board for maintenance.
But I love them anyway.
Currently I’m in Belgium, playing in a chess tournament.
I can logon to an Internet cafe (at 2330 local time) and still visit the SDMB for nothing!
(even though Belgian keyboards are a right pain in the bum: the A is in a different place, and there are 3 characters on some keys…)
Count me in as another who has noticed some improvement in the last few weeks, particularly during the day from work. Though things are sometimes erratic and unpredictable (one minute things are very fast, another minute things are verrrrrrrry slow), overall I would say the performance of the board has noticably improved.
Thanks to everyone who has been working on improving things.
I also think a 28.8 connection and a suck-ass provider like AOL might have just a little something to do with your problem, techchick.
I’ve noticed a significant speed-up as well, over the last few weeks. It’s been really great – I think the mods and admins all rule.
I know this is just a wacky, wild, waaay out there guess, but could the slowdown possibly have anything to do with the number of threads we start? Huh? Maybe?
This is a board to fight ignorance. Often times one has to stretch the thread out on a rack to find the ignorance that’s being fought. Even in MPSIMS, there is the occasional microscopic grain of ignorance fighting in threads like post count parties or appreciation threads when we learn a little more about a person.
But these “I’ll post the first line to a song and everyone else keep it going.” well, I’m at a loss. Truly, I’m shrugging my shoulders at what ignorance I’m supposed to be fighting. I feel as if just looking at the thread titles puts force feeds ignorance directly into my cerebellum.
What are we learning? The lyrics to a song? Look on google! Proving that you knew the lyrics to the song? Heeeeeeeey…we all did.
I award those threads no points, and may God have mercy on their souls.
Thank you, Ender. I just said in chat today that I thought those threads are even more pointless than post parties (which I also don’t get the appeal of). I felt like posting a link to a site with the complete lyrics, but I restrained myself.
hey tubadiva, you mentioned about AOL being resource hog related to the computer being used. Well, does the effect that AOL has on the client reverberate to the server the client is accessing? And can this resource hogging cause the latency on part of the client and the server, affecting other connections? I get these weird 100% resource use spikes myself, and I use Earthlink.
Author, author!
I agree. Ever since the types of searches one could do were reduced, things have been faster, esp. late at night (on the east coast of the US).
Tuba
I have an AOL address but I don’t use AOL to connect to the 'net unless my dial up is on drugs. I can usually tell when it’s my connection that’s bogging down on me and not the site. I frequent many things at once time.

It’s not my connection speed so much as it’s the SDMB. Why do I know that? Well, I can access other areas of the 'net with shitty speed and have much better results. Say Fathom and the Una Board among other sites that are message boards or other sites that are database intensive. (I do frequent more than the above listed.) Oh and as far as your “pathetic” quote and that I should be sympathetic…well a hardy, kiss my butt to you. I am not mearly whining over the SDMB I am stating that I think that some decisions and actions should be made for EVERYONE you troglodite (did I spell that right?) Anyhow, I am not here to pick you like a carcass but I do wish you would see the meaning of my posts rather than looking at it as a whiney little techchick…
As for the idea that there are others on the SDMB late at night, I am aware of this. What I am trying to get at is we need a solution for the SDMB and those of us that love this site. It also might help others in the future if they run a message board. I have noticed that late at night it’s even slow…not as painfully slow as the day time but it has become increasingly slower in the last few weeks. Tonight, it’s much smoother but come later in the week it will probably slow down.
Oh and BTW, I am a board owner and not a moderator anywhere anymore except my poor excuse for a message board. My ties are still out there but my moderating duties have ended elsewhere.
BTW, I paid attention tonight, it was still slow for me until about 11:30 PM Central, when it sped up greatly. This is ALWAYS the case for me.
techchick, just because some sites are loading fast when you are having problems with SDMB doesn’t mean that it’s a problem with the board servers. There could be high latency and/or packet loss on some router between the POP you are dialing in to and the SDMB, but you wouldn’t pass through that router going to most other places. If it’s not a problem with your system or ISP, then this is probably the cause of your problems. I NEVER experience slowness after 11:30 PM or so. I do experience slowness at some other sites at particular times though, and when I run a traceroute it’s usuall the same peering point where things are slowing down - I’m sharing an OC3 with a half-dozen people at night, so any slowness I encounter is NOT my connection.
And even worse than that, people are trying to have fun!
Sweet Jesus on a pogostick, how on earth are we gonna survive? They must be stopped!
I suggest we ask the mods to close every thread that doesn’t live up to the ‘fighting ignorance’ motto.
Who cares about the Disneyland mascots? Jeesh, if I needed to know that I could have bought a book!
Someone saw some wacky things today! Thanks for telling me that and forcing me to waste my time on pointless threads. Posted in MPSIMS, nonetheless!
It’ll never work.
But I do agree… those lyric posts are irritating.
I’ve been meaning to check on this for a while:
Where is this mysterious “Una Board” of which I keep hearing? Whenever I see mention of it, I think “I should check that out” but I can’t find it. Help.
JeffB - I mailed it to you.
Una
Thanks, I got it.
Hey Una, would you mind e-mailing me too?
Thanks a bunch.

Why pnuk guy, I hadn’t ever thought about that. Thank you for the great suggestion! Mods, can we look into that please?
Seriously, has it come to the point where, on a board designed to fight ignorance, we’ve actually become surprised when someone suggests that it might be a good idea to fight ignorance?
