It wasn’t bad as far as veggie burgers go (meaning there was no gag reflex) But I bet it is probably ‘grilled’ (or whatever the hell they do to them) on the same surface as their cow-carcass burgers. So I am sure it is soaked with animal product - making it a less than vegan food. Anyway, I won’t eat ‘real’ burgers. I’m not a vegetarian, I just avoid red meat.
And green or purple meat for that matter…
Has anyone ever had a decent veggie burger, or do they exist?
I have had decent veggie burgers – I make them myself.
By the by, BK’s PR release about their veggie burger says that if you object to the use of the same grill, they can prepare the burger in the microwave, instead. All you have to do is ask, or so they say.
I like the BK veggie burgers, actually… But I’ve only ever had a couple of kinds of veggie burger I didn’t like. I think my favorite is the black bean kind that Morningstar Farms (?) makes. My mother tought me how to make a mean rice burger too…
I like the BK Veggie, I just specify them putting mustard, not mayo, and pickles on it. Makes all the difference to me. And my favorite veggie burgers and Hamburger Style Garden Burgers.
I’ll second the Morningstar Black Bean patties. (Taste nothing like a meat burger, but are really really tasty.) I wasn’t aware Chili’s had a black bean burger…is it new or “by request” only? I’ve never noticed one on the menu.
I also tried the BK Veggie yesterday and thought it was especially yukky, even by veggie-burger standards. (I especially disliked the assorted chunks of visible veggies with their assorted textures - gag!) Boca burgers are ok in restaurants, but I can’t get them to taste the same at home. Red Robin offers a good veggie burger as well as a Boca Burger. One of them is so good I at first thought they made a mistake and gave me a regular burger.
Portobello mushrooms are absolutely foul. Anyone who thinks they taste (or have a texture) remotely like meat is smoking crack.
I love the original Garden burger. If you do it right, it’s crunchy on the outside and gooey on the inside. It’s also pretty versital. I’ve made garden burger parmesan, served the patty on a bed of asperagus with a mushroom sauce, among other things. I’m glad to hear that Burger King is offering a veg option that’s not a salad!
voguevixen, wait! hear me out! I HATE portabello mushrooms, and in fact, all varieties of mushrooms. (They’re fungus, you know.) But somehow, these Franklin people managed to do something to them to make it taste good, and like meat. I don’t know how, and I don’t really want to know. (It’s hard enough to keep my mind off the fact that I’m eating mushrooms) But somehow, it works.
I would have never found them on my own, due to my anti-fungus stance, but I was at a BBQ, and was told: “Here’s a veggie burger” I ate it, and said, “Wow! that’s the best veggie burger ever! what brand is it?” Lo and behold: Franklin Portabello. <shrug>
OpalCat, I once would’ve concurred with you, since I have a distrust of food that thinks it’s another type of food (turkey pastrami, imitation carb meat, etc.). But once I started eating veggie burgers (for health reasons, mainly. I still love meat.) they grew on me. After all, why have a veggie “burger” if it doesn’t taste like a burger? Why not just have vegetables?
I’m with ya, gonzoron…if Turkey Pastrami, Turkey Ham and Turkey Bacon (what is it about turkey, anyhow?) didn’t taste substanitally like the real deal, I wouldn’t bother…
