I bought a pomegranate. What should I do with it?

The fruit was on sale and looked interesting.

Any suggestions? I’ve tried a few of the seeds raw and I rather like the flavor so far.

I’d like to know the answer to your question too! I have seen that POM juice in the stores–rather expensive–and it’s supposed to be quite the antioxidant.

As for the fruit…I am at a loss.

I grew up with a pomegranate tree in the back yard.

What we did was just crack it open, and suck and chew on the multitude of seeds. There’s a little bit of “meat” on each seed and you just chew it off and spit out the seed. A lot of work for a little bit of fruity goodness.

I have no idea what recipes would be used with a pomegranate. I just cracked them open on a rock in the back yard and ate 'em.

Hope this helps!

I remember cutting them top-to-bottom into sections, then putting the sections in a bowl of water. From there you press all the little sac things into the water and discard the rest. Then strain off the water and eat those juicy bits, seeds included.

Freaky. We just chewed up the seeds and swallowed them :).

Not to pick on you at all ( really! ), but it brings to mind a TV news “green grocer” segment I was watching once. The topic was pomegranates and in the course of the little discussion the reporter with the grocer-dude mentioned she didn’t like getting them for her kids because they are so messy ( true ) and that it is so much work, what with having to spit out all of the seeds. The grocer-guy ( and I, faithful boob-tube watcher ) just stared at her with amazement. The eventual reply to Ms. Reporter was - “You eat the seeds! Why would you spit them out?”

In point of fact my understanding is that there are some varieties of pomegranate that have unusually hard, dense seeds that aren’t easily consumable. But my understanding is that most commercially available varieties ( a la your standard supermarket ) should be fully edible. Unless the texture feaks you out or something ( perfectly understandable - I can’t take bananas for that reason ).

Pull the pin out and throw it at your enemies. The shrapnel burst will kill anyone standing within 20 feet of ground zero.

I primarily buy them for my Amazon parrot. He loves ripping into them and eating the seeds. It makes him look like Vicious Birdie From Hell, too, with all the red red kroovy flowing down his beak.

Cut the pomegranate in half, then get out as many of those beautiful, juicy red seeds as you can. Keep doing this until you’ve liberated all of them into a bowl. Pick out the white membrane that holds them into the fruit until you have a bowl full of nothing but the seeds. Now wash your hands because they are very sticky and covered in red juice. Then sit down and eat them ALL, and spit out NOTHING, because the seeds are just fine to eat. I’ve been eating them all my life and never had an adverse reaction to eating the entire seed, pit and all.

Can you tell poms are one of my favorite fruit? I buy them as a special treat and I can eat a whole one all by myself in one sitting. Yum!

Yes, eating the seeds whole is the typical way of doing it. Fibre and anti-oxidants, it really is a wonder food. Personally, I like to pull the whole thing apart, putting the seeds into a glass as I go, and then pour a can of Fresca over the top and drink it and eat the seeds together. But then, I’m a bit weird that way.

Pomegranate seeds are a nice addition to a salad.

Pomegranate sauce ( cook a couple pomegranates worth of seeds on a hot stove for 10-15 minutes, strain back into pot, add half cup of sugar and optional vodka ) is wonderful on ice cream and cheese cake and other such things.

And I’ll add that if you score the outside of the pomegranate lightly, then soak it for five minutes in water, and peel away the skin, you can seed the whole thing without breaking any of the seeds, thus avoiding a lot of the mess involved when you actually cut the pomegranate.

I eat them at my desk at work and usually open them with my letter opener. It’s a huge mess, but it really breaks up the afternoon.

whoa! I never knew you could eat the seeds. I just spit them out all these years… now I feel like a dork.

Pomegranate and Feta Salad

Yummy.

And here I’ve been meticulously slicing away the fruity red stuff, just to get at those delicious seeds!

Offer it to an under-aged Greek goddess?

I think that might have been the case with our backyard tree. It’s been a while, but I just don’t think the seeds were that palatable. I was a kid, of course, but they seemed too hard and “woody” to eat. I’ll have to try to grocery store variety and see if they’re any different.

Do you know any?

BTW,

The replies on this thread were very useful. I tried some pomegranate sauce on a little piece of cake and it was delicious.

And if you do pick up some Pom, pomegranate juice and vodka is heaven in a martini glass.

After reading this last night, I went out to get a pomegranate. I’ve had them before but not in a long time (5yrs +). I used the ‘score skin and soak’ method of preparing to peel it. This worked very well. I tried eating some of the seeds but after a while, I stopped. This was a huge pomegranate and I didn’t want a bunch of indigestable wood in my belly. Good fruit, tho. I could kind of go for another one now!

I too went out to get my first pomegranate. They are amazing. My daughter ate most of mine, but I got some. This morning I am sending hubby out to the store to get sugar and pomegranates. I plan to make hard candy flavored with pomegranate juice. I made hard candy flavored with lemon last night.
