I stopped by Whole Foods last night after my class, and what greeted me at the entrance but an enormous mound of pomeranates, 2 for $3! So delicious! So much fun!
I discovered today that you can eat the pips whole, seeds and all, instead of straining out the juice with your teeth, the way I was taught. The seeds aren’t as bitter and astringent as I’d thought, and it’s so much less work without all the spitting. (No vulgar comments please. Well…only if you must.)
I should probably download some of the recipes from the good folks at the Pomegranate Council, who provided that information, and learn to cook with them, especially since I have that get-together tomorrow with some Doper pals (Hi That_Darn_Cat, Blue Kangaroo, Moi!) but that would involve buying more pomegranates. Mine are all gone! I must have condemned myself to two hundred months in Hell, but it was worth it.
How do I pick a good one? I got adventurous this year and bought my first one at WalMart – I wasn’t impressed. I’m guessing this was more a problem with WalMart than with the noble pomegranate.
I bought one earlier today and tried splitting it apart to get at the seeds like you would normally do but this fruit didn’t want to comply so, thinking quickly and refusing to get up 'cause I’m lazy, I just pushed in a hole, put the cavity to my lips, and then sucked on it while squeezing all the juice out of the seeds.
It’s kind of fun, actually. And cathartic too – they make a very satisfying crunch as you squeeze harder and harder.
Good time for me to see this thread - I had my very first pomegranate yesterday and couldn’t help but think, “Hey, I wish I had an infinite mound of these.”
I discovered that I liked to squeeze every individual piece of flesh in my mouth with my finger and my thumb, it causes a fun explosion of pomegranate juice. I love playing with food.
