I hope I am not the only one with this syndrom. For example Baldur’s Gate II: I play till chapter 2 or 3, get tired of my characted or think of a way I could do it better from the beginning, and start off with a new character. Diablo? Same. Darkstone? Same. NoX? Same. What is it about these games that I just can’t stay interested in them? I really like RPGs and all, but I just always keep thinking of a “better” or “more fun” way to play them, and start over. The only game that I have been able to play consistantly is Civilization III. Do I have ADD?
Anyone else see the irony in a poster named Chekmate starting a thread on not being able to finish games? Just me? Oh…
No, you don’t have ADD in my opinion. You may have a life though. These games require quite a large investment of time and sometimes it just seems tedious. I’ve played Diablo II for about a year and have only beaten it on hell mode about 3 times. Twice they were barbarians. Sometimes it just seems like work to trudge through the damn Flayer Jungle (and most of Act 3 for that matter) for the umpteenth time. Or sometimes a character runs into a wall and isnt strong enough to proceed and dying time and again isnt fun. So you give up. It happens. If you’re coming up with ways to have “more fun” then you are doing it right. Remember, the object of the game isn’t to win, it’s o have fun. If you’re having fun, then the creators have accomplished their job.
No your not alove i have 50 or more games ive never finished … i start one and get bored fustrated or a new game comes out and i drop the old game until i erase it

Quoth Second Echo:
“Only” three times? I’ve been at it for six months, mostly with the same character, and haven’t beaten it once.
The only game I play regularly is Diablo II: LoD; I have several characters that are just starting out in Nightmare mode: four different Barbs and one each of the other types. I also have Dungeon Siege but I haven’t done much with it yet. If I just want a quick gaming fix, I’ll go into one of my racing games, some of which I cheated so I can just race and not have to worry about any sort of career mode. If I have the time, usually Friday and Saturday nights, I’ll play one game until well past midnight. This is usually Civ3 because it takes so long to process just one turn but I’ve also done this with D2 and so far once with DS.
I’ll go back and finish Baldur’s Gate and maybe even Darkstone sometime. Oh, and one of those all-nighters was to finish the last two missions in Freedom Force.
To my PC list of not finished games I can add Operation Flashpoint, Starcraft and C&C add on discs and a whole slew of PC games that I bought on budget because I thought it a good idea at the time. These are on my black list because the only way I’ll finish them is to do an “all nighter” and having found the benefits of a social life and sleep I don’t think I’ll do that again. The last game I did that for was Zelda, Ocarina of Time on the N64 (even though I still haven’t finished all the subplots  )
Are you like me, with the age of “all nighters” behind you? I prefer games like SC2000 and CivIII where you can dip in and out of the game and take time to consider you’re moves, or Nintendo type games where it doesn’t take that long to finish a game but I keep coming back again and again because its so damn playable or there are intriguing sub plots.
Well, there was a time after high school when every night was an all-nighter and for good reason. It was the best way I could avoid my PITA brother, who had just returned home after finally graduating college. I’d be up around 2:30 in the afternoon and play games on my Commodore 64 until at least three in the morning; sometimes I’d even be playing when Dad left for work. I’m very rarely up past 2 these days and only on Saturdays when Doctor Who is on at midnight, right after Red Dwarf.
I’m the same way. Most games I buy I am never able to complete, because they are just too damn long. Recently, I’ve been doing well though. For the longest time, “Thief” was the only game I finished in the last 5 years…(almost finished Thief II, but stopped playing halfway through the last level.) But, recently, I finished “Return to Castle Wolfenstein” and I’m very close to finishing “Medal of Honor: Allied Assault.”
I play sports games a ton, and I like the occasional racing game, but you really don’t “beat” those, although I’ve won the Stanley Cup about 4 times through various NHL 9x and 200x seasons. I’m just about to hit the playoffs in my season for NHL2002.
Oh…and I just started Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast…we’ll see how far I go in that. (I’m only on level 3 right now).
Played Black and White for a while, but never even made it out of the first world…might go back and start over on that one.
But, I have many a game that I have never (and likely WILL never) complete.
Jman
I have been playing for YEARS and have only beat one game, Mario64.
I’ve always wanted to play a full 162 game baseball schedule. Never have though. I got to game 132 with the Cincinnati Reds about 6-7 years ago before the game lost my saved season.
I’ve beaten Zelta 64 but haven’t collected all the Golden Skultulas.
I have however played full NFL seasons on Madden.
