But I did just pick up the two major almanacs for 2004. I know they’re a little hokey, but I love ‘em. I’ve got Robert B. Thomas’ “Old Farmer’s Almanac.” (founded in 1792!) and “Harris’ Farmer’s Almanac” (even older- founded in 1692.) Almanacs aren’t always spot-on, but I’ve found them to be fairly accurate. I even checked out the weather for our wedding day last year. The weatherman predicted rain. The almanac said not. It was right.
Anyhow- Anyone want to know what the weather will be like at a certain time, in a particular part of the USA? The almanacs cover from now until October, 2004. They also give suggestions on what kinds of things should be done in a garden at specific times and what vegetables will grow well this year. They list all of the signifigant “heavenly events,” like eclipses and whatnot as well.
Anybody want me to look anything up? Just give me a city and state, a month or specific date. (I know…I’m such a dork.)
jujuju, it looks like your winter is predicted to be slightly colder than usual. Winter Lettuce will grow in even in very cold weather. Good days to plant above-ground crops (like lettuce) are Nov. 3rd ,4th ,5th ,8th, 23rd, 26th and 27th of 2003. The crop should be thinned out throughout December. Winter Lettuce grows well in low-light conditions.
According to “Harris’ Farmer’s Almanac,” this will be a good year for root vegetables (potatoes, beets, turnips, carrots) as well. It doesn’t say when they should be planted though.
Well, DaisyFace, I’d be more than happy to look it up for you- but I need to know what state you live in and near what major city. Because weather is different in different parts of the country, you see.
beegirl, I’m looking for you, but I could be more specific if I had a city. (Just which big one you’re near is fine.)
Sure, ShadiRoxan. April (and May) will be warmer and less rainy than normal. Temperature about 60 degrees on the 10th of April, no rain predicted for that specific day- although it does have rain likely on the 8th and 9th. Scattered thunderstorms are possible during that entire week.
