I can see my heart beat. Is that normal?

Hiya. Just laying here on the couch, and every time my heart beats, my tummy moves. It’s kinda weird. Is that a normal thing? It’s kinda freaking me out. Don’t think I’ve ever really noticed it before.

Plus, I’m think I’m a hypocondriac, so that doesn’t help. I don’t feel funny or anything, just mesmerized while watching my heart beat.

I’ve noticed that too. I usually take it to mean I don’t have any muscle tone. :stuck_out_tongue:

Of course, after a good workout, I can see some veins pulsing in my head. Doesn’t strike me as unhealthy.

What part of your “tummy” is moving? Are you a skinny fella?

Both my mother and I had a similar phenomenon for different reasons. You used to be able to see my heartbeat thru my T-Shirt. Same when I was little in the summer after working hard in the yard you could see my mother’s heart beat thru a light fitting T-Shirt.

Mine was because I was 6 feet tall and at the time only weighed 140 pounds. When I gained weight (especially muscle) by working out it went away. My mother on the other hand was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid. Once she had it removed the problem ended.

Sounds like you might be getting a little on the lean side, partner! Better go hit the weights…

Ain’t got nothing to do with being skinney, cause I’m normal (6’, 190lbs) and notice the same thing. Don’t know if it’s due to a strong pulse, being relaxed, or what. Sometimes if I lay my arm down “palm up” just right my pulse will give my arm an ever so slight bounce of 1mm up/down or so. When I hold my fingers from both hands loosely together, I can clearly feel my pulse as well. As I look down at my belly right now it gives a little movement every second or so; not big enough to be considered a jiggle though. My guess is a lot of people do it but it’s so slight that they just never notice it. No worries.

Christopher Wall could see his heart beat.

Whoa! I need more coffee. I read that and thought your mom’s hand was amputated to correct her overactive thyroid… :smack:

You may want to look into an ailment called AAA - Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm – which concerned my doctor because my abdominal pulse was exceptionally strong.

Here is a site I examined during the very long week I was waiting for an ultrasound test:

You don’t seem to be the right age group for this, but it’s worth looking into.

Yeah, I can see my heartbeat, too. I always thought it had to do with the fact that I’m skinny (not anorexic skinny), but maybe it doesn’t.

I can see my heart beat exactly where the heart’s located. Oh, and I’m very skinny (despite eating more than my fat friends).

Hmmm… I was expecting this thread to talk about seeing your pulse in the distortion of your vision.

As in, after a workout, I can look at a blank wall, and it seems to pulse with my heartbeat. It’s not that my head is moving either – it’s definitely in my eyes.

Ah, well.

I think that’s pretty cool!

(I’m sure it’s nothing to worry about, seeing as several people here have observed the same thing.)

Common to see the pulse beat in different areas of the body.

I can hear my heart beat… I have a mechanical aortic heart valve.
So could you if you sat close to me. :smack:

Now that you mention it, my t-shirt is twitching in time with my heartbeat as we speak, specifically the “stretched” bit between my boobs, if you excuse the TMI. It is really jumping

I’ve noticed it in myself too. Also, often when I’m reading (which is usually done sitting cross-legged on the floor), I can feel my whole body kind of rocking on each heart-beat. It actually distracts my reading. :o

I’m about 5’8-5-9’ ish and about 140 pounds…is that also unhealthy?

If I lie on my back with my shift off, and hold my breath, I can see my heartbeat. My abdomen has this very peculiar twitching in tune with my heartbeat. I don’t know why I’m able to see it; I’d figure there’d have to be quite a bit of force behind each beat to make part of my abdomen twitch like that.

If you are thin it is quite normal to see the abdominal aorta pulsing. If you are young, you don’t have an aneurysm, it is just normal. Around here a skinny person is so rare that the doc’s frequently order an ultrasound on a young person with a visible pulsatile aorta. Sheesh.

I can HEAR my heart too… but only after running say 80yards or so, then stopping and opening my mouth. Can clearly hear my heart pumping through my mouth. But then again, I was born with a ventricilar septal defect 34 years ago…
