I clamber back online, or, 13-year-old computer = slow Dope

Yes, my Mac is back from the service depot. I took it in because the battery was behaving oddly (suddenly shutting down the computer with no warning as 75% charge). I was also concerned that the disc drive was not reading CDs. Diagnosis? No CD problem; battery defective and replaced under warranty at no cost.

But… I was away from easy, frequent access to the Dope for almost three days! twitch I had to post from the library! twitch I had to scrounge access! whimper

I did manage to connect to the internet using an old PowerMac 8100/80, though.

As an exercise it was interesting. The system browser was Netscape 3.0 Gold, and it had a fit when encountering modern Java and Javascript. I downloaded iCab 2.99 and it was usable, but each page of the Dope took five or six minutes to render. The machine was plugged into the same cable connection I’m using now, so it wasn’t speed of download.

I’m glad to be back to my MacBook Pro.

Welcome back to easier access.

The good old days, eh? Welcome back!

Surfing it old school, huh?

What really would have been Twilight-Zone-ish would have been if you connected your 13-year-old computer and saw the Web as it was 13 years ago, in 1995.

Seriously, good to hear that things are OK, and glad to have you back.
