Not quite a rant, but still I wanted to say this:
So my mom has this cute little ibook with a 12 inch screen. It’s very little and, as I said, cute. But I became a PC user about ten years ago, mainly because the software just wasn’t coming out for macs. Not that I don’t like them or anything, but it’s just not what I use anymore.
So anyway, two nights ago, I press the power button and nothing happens. Obviously this is not a good thing. I plug the notebook in, in case the battery’s fried, and press the button again. This time smoke starts coming out of the vent. This, I realize, is a universally recognized BAD sign. The Apple website cryptically instructs me to bring it immediately to an Apple authorized service person, should smoke ever issue from my device(as if this was a common occurrence).
This morning I make my appointment at the ‘Genius Desk’(and really, that was a bit much). Sara, the Genius on duty, was able to tell me that the computer was indeed broken(thanks), probably because of a fried power supply or logic board, even more likely both(and that was such a cheery thought). To the tune of $300. And yeah, this is why I always get extended warranties on computers.
So all of that was fine. Slightly more disturbing, as she lifted up the keyboard, from her actions, it was apparent that the wireless card in the computer had been stuffed in upside down with a piece of plastic, I assume from its manufacturing, still attached.
So I don’t know enough about the inside of Macs, but I can’t believe the card was meant to be placed in the computer both ways. The wireless connection in that computer had always been kinda wonky, but I may be paranoid now.
