I’ve been noticing more and more posters online and even on here using “teh gay”…
I didn’t “catch teh gay”. I, and the other members of the Gay community don’t have “teh gay”. So shut the fuck up with your childish, imbecilic, insulting phrases which reduce us to some sort of bad joke.
I don’t come here to have my sexuality belittled. I get enough of that from the Neanderthals who actively try to take away my rights on a daily basis.
I came here because this is supposed to be a place that is fighting ignorance - and if you can’t wrap your walnut-sized brains around the concept of discussing LGBT issues without making jokes, then don’t get involved in the discussion, you ignorant fuckheads.
You’re probably also perfect examples of those guys who can’t discuss Gay rights without adding “I’m OK with it as long as they don’t try anything on me”. Don’t flatter yourselves. Like we’d want to hit on some tiny-brained cretins who can’t even spell the word “the” right.
I’m torn between wanting you half-wits to never have children - since you would probably raise them to have walnut-brains just like you - and wanting you to fuck your brains out, just so we can get to the next generation of your family trees - which I’m guessing have gotta be more enlightened than your pathetic asses.

Hmm… I’ve never used to phrase myself, but when I see it, it seems like it is used not to mock gays themselves, but mocking anti-gay people, implying they would say something like that…

Could you give an example of anyone on this board who used that phrase seriously? That is someone here who really is afraid of “catching the gay,” as opposed to someone who might use that phrase ironically to show how stupid the idea of “catching the gay” is.
Yeah, I kind of thought it was being used ironically, to point out just how nonsensical homophobic arguments are.
I haven’t seen anyone here use the phrase “teh gay” to honestly denigrate homosexuality. I’ve seen it when they’re imitating and mocking people who think that homosexuality is some form of communicable disease.

Yeah, I’ve been using it lately with big ol’ air quotes and roll eyes in my head - making fun of morons who really do hate gay people (and refuse to type well.) I’m torn between offering a non-apology (“I’m sorry if what I do offends you.”) and telling you to bugger off, I’ll write what amuses me as long as I don’t get mod slapped.
But I will absolutely and unequivicably say that I, personally, do not do it because I hate gay people. I do it 'cause I hate morons who hate gay people. It’s irony, and it’s not everyone’s bag.
Are you whingeing about a particular post/thread, or just making a general statement about the way GLBT folks are treated here on the Dope?
'Cos if it’s the latter, I’d suggest that you’re categorically wrong. Using phrases like ‘teh gay’ is certainly not uncommon, but from what I’ve seen is not meant in any demeaning sense and is sometimes added appropriately to fun threads. I’m almost sure that many of our gay/lesbian/bi/transgendered members have used ‘teh gay’ themselves: does that mean they are infantile and moronic too?

I have never seen it used on the SDMB as an insult. This is probably the most tolerant message board I’ve ever come across. Well, except for our attitudes towards telemarketers, those inconsiderate asshats.

If you think the Straight freaking Dope is homophobic, then I advise you NEVER to venture onto any other message board on the entire freaking internet.
Daffyd, as a certified Uppity Queen, I would be pissed off if someone seriously stated that you could “catch the gay” or they were at risk of same. That said, I will rashly state that nobody has ever used the expression “to catch the gay” or any orthographic variant thereof without sarcasm in the history of this board.
If you want being gay to be accepted as simply part of who you are, you have to accept that you may be teased about it. Just like anyone else can be teased about who they are. Is being gay just one aspect of the whole you, or is it something that you feel entitles you to special treatment? I think that that phrase is usually used, at least on these boards, to make fun of people who are actually homophobic most of the time. You might want to take an extra moment and reread to see how it is actually being used in each instance, at least here. You might find that people here are treating being gay as no big deal, simply a part and parcel of who someone is and as such no more deserving of scorn than it is of adulation, and it’s the people who don’t believe that that get castigated. Pretty much the way things should be in the real world, but all too often aren’t.
