I didn’t even know the SDMB had a private messaging system.
And whoever tried to use it to send me a message forgot that the Admin locked that feature years ago.
So, although I got the e-mail, telling me that I have had a private message sent to me, I can’t read it.
Look, my e-mail addy is available. Just use it, OK?
I have been one of the more vocal critics of the Straight Dope’s Message Board’s technical ineptitude. However, the new server does offer some promise of moving us into the 21st century.
The lady’s name is Grace, Grace Hopper, a U.S. Navy Admiral and the woman who coined the term “bug” in computer systems, due to an actual insect, if I remember correctly.
A Moth to be precise*. Admiral Hopper was big on precision. She is also credited with leading the team to design Cobol the first real computer language. She is also on of my heroes.
She was the first female flag officer in the US.

There is a lot more to the story, early computers had a series of large electro-mechanical switches and the moth interfered with the switch closing and thus caused the program to fail to run properly. She duly noted the problem in her log, which not resides in the Smithsonian.
** She did not truly coin the term “bug” however, there is evidence that the term predates the moth incident. However she did popularize it for computers.
Nobody wants to message me, Bos. You see, you are popular and respected and will be assured of response. I could put up my IM and email and expect only spam. Quit yer bitchin’.
Nah. Her team was just the first one on record as finding a “bug” that was an actual bug, (i.e insect). From the labbook entry, it’s clear that the term existed previously. More here.
