I didn't even know the SDMB HAD a private messaging system.

I didn’t even know the SDMB had a private messaging system.

And whoever tried to use it to send me a message forgot that the Admin locked that feature years ago.

So, although I got the e-mail, telling me that I have had a private message sent to me, I can’t read it.
Look, my e-mail addy is available. Just use it, OK?

Someone has sent you a PM over on the test board. If you log in over there, that system should let you read it.

“Test board”?

Also, the author was Derelith.

I second this reaction.

See the announcement at the top of the forum – or go to ATMB.

The Test Board on the new server: http://208.100.26.199/sdmb/

Yes I said the new server. It even has a 5 minute edit feature for now.

Jim

Thanks for the link. I, unsurprisingly, was clueless about the new server.

I always knew the only person that would send you a message would be a derelict.

What Exit?

I have been one of the more vocal critics of the Straight Dope’s Message Board’s technical ineptitude. However, the new server does offer some promise of moving us into the 21st century.

Hmmm, I always assumed Jerry was a guy but I guess that is what happens when you assume.

The lady’s name is Grace, Grace Hopper, a U.S. Navy Admiral and the woman who coined the term “bug” in computer systems, due to an actual insect, if I remember correctly.

A Moth to be precise*. Admiral Hopper was big on precision. She is also credited with leading the team to design Cobol the first real computer language. She is also on of my heroes.

She was the first female flag officer in the US.

Jim

  • There is a lot more to the story, early computers had a series of large electro-mechanical switches and the moth interfered with the switch closing and thus caused the program to fail to run properly. She duly noted the problem in her log, which not resides in the Smithsonian.
** She did not truly coin the term “bug” however, there is evidence that the term predates the moth incident. However she did popularize it for computers.

I knew the discerning membership of the SDMB would know who that was in the picture. (By the way, she is standing in front of a Sperry Univac.)

I saw her on David Letterman in the late 1980’s I would guess. She was a very interesting guest.

Nobody wants to message me, Bos. You see, you are popular and respected and will be assured of response. I could put up my IM and email and expect only spam. Quit yer bitchin’.

I never knew about this either. Not that it bothers me any.

What I find humerous, is the response. Nobody under 1800 posts has replied to this thread. We’re an oblivious bunch, ain’t we?

Nah. Her team was just the first one on record as finding a “bug” that was an actual bug, (i.e insect). From the labbook entry, it’s clear that the term existed previously. More here.

I only found out because of the ‘new server’ thread in ATMB.

What? I’m under 1K. Happy;)

HERE is a picture of the new server.

Jerry is actually a very young man – or was when he started this gig. Tis a pity.
