I disagree with this warning (Idle Thoughts)

CSI: Miami was a very popular program and *dons sunglasses and YEAAAAAAAHHHHHHH! have become popular memes not only on this message board, but all over the internet. I’d say there’s a very good chance the average U.S. Doper would be familiar with them.

Nobody said that Isamu deserved a warning, only that he and Terry the Tramp deserve fair and equal treatment. If they had both received mod notes, so be it, as long as they were both treated equally.

Billfish didn’t say that anyone said that.

Even if that were true, which I’m happy to have you prove, this is not an exclusively US message board. Not by a long shot.

Yes, but it’s hosted in the U.S. and the majority of its members are from here.

I’d say not, but it obviously depends on how you define your demographic. You seem to be assuming that watching popular TV shows is practically universal, but I don’t think it is, and “popular” is a relative term. The meme meant nothing to me, and I can think of many acquaintances to whom it would likely also mean nothing. I for one have never watched that show, not even once, let alone become familiar with it. I don’t consider that either “good” or “bad”, just a preference that I’m sure many others share.

…I had no clue to the context of that particular post until I read the OP here.

When I jumped into that thread last night all I saw was someone yelling “yeeeeah!!!” in a thread about a mass-shooting that killed 26 people. I read the post several different ways, even turned the messageboard on its side, and I still didn’t get the joke. I concluded that it was someone just being unnecessarily cruel. We can’t be expected to “connect the dots” with a couple of unrelated posts that just happened to proceed it. Message-boards don’t work like that. Its why we have quote boxes.

Now that the joke has been explained: yeah, maybe the warning might be a bit harsh. But if you have to explain the joke…then the joke or the meme isn’t obvious. If I was Idle I would have issued the warning as well. On its own without context: how exactly is one supposed to discern that it was “a joke” and not somebody expressing glee at mass murder?

…I’m well aware of CSI Miami and I’m well aware of the meme, and I don’t live in the USA. And I had no idea what that post was all about.

This is an excellent analogy, because it points to one of the worst features of a gulag, i.e., that they were constantly kicking out people who wanted to be there but who refused to be nice to fellow gulag-inmates.

I posted a poll in Cafe Society to keep this thread on topic. It’s not meant to be a scientific or accurate representation, just an informal survey of everyone who responds.

However, I’ll take x-ray- vision’s post as a cite that a great many people are familiar with it.

Leaving aside the entire CSI issue, I’m surprised that celebrating the death of a mass murderer would be construed as “being a jerk/trolling”.

I would agree with this.

…but it doesn’t matter how many people are “familiar with it.” I am more than familiar with it. But I didn’t expect it in a thread discussing a topic that is so regularly “hijacked” that anything outside of the “normal parameters” of the bounds of the forum get paid more attention.

…I didn’t read the post as “celebrating the death of a mass murderer.” I read it as someone celebrating the shootings.

…sorry for the triple post. But it wasn’t until I looked at cochrane’s post that I realized that I had never seen this:

(⌐■_■)

before. Is this an essential part of the meme? Thats supposed to be someone taking off the sunglasses? Really? It looks like a random collection of dots squares and lines.

It’s actually supposed to be someone (David Caruso, in the original) putting ON sunglasses. Imagine it like three emojis: each line has a “face.” The first face has no sunglasses. The second face is “sunglasses going on.” The third face has the sunglasses on. Once you see it, you probably won’t be able to see it any other way. (Not that this has anything to do with the warning in question, just an explanation for Banquet Bear.)

It might help to see them if they were spaced.

•_•) < face without sunglasses

( •_•)>⌐■-■ < character putting on shades

(⌐■_■) < character wearing shades

YEAAAAHHHHH!

…while I appreciate the explanation: that you have to explain it is really my point.

Isamu was commenting on HD’s post, which was about how the shooter had died. TtT was following up on that.

I guess it’s possible that IT, being unfamiliar with the meme, didn’t appreciate that the TtT post was a continuation of the Isamu post ,and thus didn’t appreciate that it was about the shooter and not about the killings.
