I disagree with this warning (Idle Thoughts)

So, it was real popular 11 years ago. That’s fascinating. Actually, it’s not really, and it’s not even close to proving what cochrane claimed. What you’d need to show is something like this: that 50% or more of people who have internet access, worldwide, would be familiar with that meme to prove what cochrane had claimed. You can do a weighted average by country and age based on SDMB members, if you like. I won’t blame you if you leave that task to cochrane.

Not gonna bother. 72% of the posters who responded to my poll know the meme. I’ll settle for that. Sorry if that doesn’t meet your high standards.

So “Doper” is now synonymous with “people who have internet access.” Also fascinating.

This guy (the OP of that internet “poll”) said it better than I could: “Not meant to be scientific”.

Nope. Read what Cochrane actually said. He said US Dopers, not worldwide people on the internet.

And what’s “a good chance”, exactly? 30%? 25%?

…this is another example of “confusing the issue.” Who is IT? Who is TtT? Posters have names, and if I have to scroll up and click the link to figure out what you are talking about then you aren’t making things easy for everybody.

I am familiar with the meme. And didn’t appreciate it was a continuation of the Isamu post: because I didn’t read Isamu’s post. So it was just a random person on the internet yelling “yeah!!!” in a thread about a mass shooting. If I had of reported it (and I didn’t) then Idle Thoughts would have been alerted to a single post not a series of post: and would have moderated accordingly. We can’t expect the moderators to check the context on every occasion: especially in a topic that revolves around such a contentious issue.

We can’t? I kind of would expect the mods to check the context of a post before issuing a warning for trolling. I certainly hope I would rate that courtesy.

I have reversed the warning.
I didn’t know it was a CSI reference, I thought it was a gleeful exclamation at many people being dead. Since it seems it wasn’t, though, I have no problem taking the warning back.

As for Isamu’s post, I read/saw it and I did not feel it rose to the level of needing any mod action, personally.

Banquet Bear is correct and you are incorrect in your assumptions.

I have never seen CSI. I didn’t get either reference. I had seen **Isamu’**s post and I figured it might have been some sort of meme face he posted, while making a joke of his own. I didn’t really bat an eye at that post.

Then I get to Terry’s post and I automatically and very clearly read it as someone saying “yeahhhhh!” in a happy, gleeful way that many people (churchgoers, especially, as there are some fairly hardcore atheists in this world) were now dead.
There wasn’t any moment I linked up **Terry’**s post with Isamu’s post…because I’ve never seen CSI, see.

And you were doing so well.

It’s not implausible that that might be why someone was saying “Yeahhhhh!” so happily.
Reasoning doesn’t matter, though. The main point remains: I saw it as a gleeful reaction at people being dead (and I wasn’t the only one).

Thank you for that.

That’s why you felt it was worth throwing in “especially, as there are some fairly hardcore atheists in this world”? Because it’s not implausible? Something not being implausible “especially” made you think that particular implausible thing might be causing glee at the death of innocent people, including toddlers? Where do you encounter these hardcore atheists?

In all years on this board, how many times have atheists been gleeful that innocent Christians were killed because they were Christian? But the relevant thing is, that it’s not implausible. :dubious:

So say we all!

[That’s an internet meme harkening to the reboot of Battlestar Galactica, btw, so please don’t mod note me. ]

You have obviously not known some of the atheists I’ve known.
I’m not discussing this any further. I was just trying to give a reason why someone might yell “Yeahhh” like that, since I was mind boggled that someone would do it at all, at the time. The warning is now reversed, the hows or whys don’t matter any more.
This is my last post to this topic.

You didn’t answer my questions. Hardly surprising. You’ve known more than one atheist that has shown glee that innocent Christians were killed because they were Christians, eh? Sure.

It is not an uncommon thing to be found online. Not in the slightest. You can argue they aren’t really atheists, or are just trolling for reactions. But the fact remains these things are in fact said.

But you weren’t asking a question. You were accusing him of making up shit to attack atheists. What’s more, he had already tried to appease you once by saying that it didn’t have to be atheists, but you decided to attack him even more.

At that point, it is perfectly reasonable for him to think you are just attacking him. I honestly think you are, too, and am only posting this obvious response so you can’t claim there was no defense. I state the obvious a lot for that reason.

The matter having been resolved, I’m closing this thread.
