I do find one foot of snow in less than 24 hours a tad excessive.

Depends on your location. Near the Great Lakes is one thing; semi-arid Saskatchewan is another!

In other news, sky has cleared and temp had dropped: -26 C. this morning.

I slept in. Seemed the most sensible thing to do.

One thing about Newfoundlanders - they won’t let beer go bad!

Snow is fun December 24th and December 25th.
Otherwise, if I never have to walk/drive/live near the stuff again, it is quite fine by me.

I used to live in Illinois, NYC and Berlin - had enough snow in my life - don’t need any more.

BTW, even here in Las Vegas we get the rare snowfall - usually not much and lasts for less than a day. Currently it is quite nippy here at night - in the high 20’s. Don’t like it much - far prefer those 114 degree, really hot days!

Send it to northern Ontario! Please? Pretty please? There’s practically no snow up here, especially close to the lake. And a few days ago it was +6 and we got almost a centimetre of rain. It’s ridiculous.

I ran out to the car to grab my forgotten phone - barefoot. God I love this winter*

*In comparison to other winters. Poster still prefers summer, your mileage may vary.

Just to let all you Westerners know… it is +10C in Oshawa now. There was torrential rain this morning.

I looked at the weather map, and it was -23C in Manitoba. Our weather forecast predicts below-freezing temperatures later in the week, but not even highs as low as -10. Very odd. Usually we get what you got, three days later and somewhat milder.

If you start to feel some pain or burning, that’s just my telekinetic powers at work.

And I thought that was just because I had my head in the dryer, checking for lagging socks…

You’re supposed to turn the dryer off before putting your head inside.

According to the news, it reached a high of +14.8 degrees in Toronto yesterday (Sat the 12th of January).

On the way back from the food store, the sun poked its way through the torn clouds with their patches of blue sky, and, just for a few minutes, our faces at the bus stop turned towards the light like flowers. But then a lower layer of fast-moving clouds came between us and the sun, and a cool north breeze seemed to kick up.

It was. There was also some lagging heat.

We were at 60 degrees yesterday, then ice and sleet today. I’d rather have snow than a sheet of ice. My dog lost traction and nearly ended up as a pretzel.

Well, two hours in the back yard, shovelling and blowing snow away from the foundations, and I’m not done yet…

Fortunately, a couple of guys with shovels came door-knocking last night and did our driveway and the public sidewalk for $20.

It’s cold. So, so cold…looking forward to getting to 0 this week though!

Also, I lucked out on my apartment: only one in the back alley to get our parking lot plowed!

Well, we gave in.

After breaking two snow shovels and the snow blower (ran over the extension cord for the car block heater, buried in said snow :smack: ), we went to the yellow pages for “snow removal”.

Guy came yesterday with his truck, trailer, bobcat, blower and crew. They spent the morning removing snow that had built up in the driveway, between our house and the neighbour’s house, near the foundations in the back, and the front.

Took him two, maybe three trips in his trailer to haul it all away. (We lost count.)

As hardy, do-it-yourself prairie folk, we are so ashamed. We have brought dishonour on our pioneer ancestors by paying filthy lucre to someone, instead of dealing with our own snow ourselves.

On the other hand, our spirits have soared at the sight of a clear driveway and clear foundations. Seen from inside in the warmth, with a nice white wine in hand.

Overall, we’re cool with it. Our pioneer ancestors can turn in their graves all they want. Hey, it might generate some heat friction to melt some snow…

Given our drought, I will not only not complain about the snowfall, I will cheerfully ask for more.

I like the snow, but I feel for you-all getting buried by too much of a good thing. Stay safe, and feel free to send some of it westward!

One nice thing about snow in Tucson - You don’t have to shovel it.

I came home today to find a frozen pile of ice and snow about a foot high at the bottom of my driveway. I hate it when you go to work with a nice clean driveway and come back to find that nice little present the plow has left for you. If it snows again my 20x40 driveway is becoming a 10x20 really quickly.

The grader operators around here are very respectful. When they’re passing a driveway, they drop down the side blade to keep the snow and ice from being pushed onto the driveway, then as soon as they’re past it, they lift it again. Ice and snow are graded to the side of the road, but driveways don’t get blocked.
