I will never understand why some people must read a value judgment into every statement that is in any way connected to race.
Let me try again. The IQ of an individual is just a fact about that individual, like their height or eye color. The average IQ of the individuals in any group is just a fact about that group like their average height or predominant eye color. Just because one possible group can be called a “race,” andthe averages in one race can be compared to the averages in another race, doesn’t mean that someone who mentions the race/IQ studies is a racist–they are just discussing facts.
Same with the OP here–if blacks really are targeting whites in that neighborhood at that time, then Pearls is just stating a fact. I don’t see how stating a fact tends to show that one is a racist (under my definition–and no one’s offered another one in this thread).

So I guess you think I’m a self-loathing white guy when it comes to asians and a racist when it comes to blacks? Also, the average IQ of a race can change over time. If the studies ever show that blacks have a higher average IQ than whites, I’ll report that and discuss it just as I report and discuss the current results.
I guess you haven’t seen the news stories from other parts of the country where blacks were indeed targeting whites. And I guess you didn’t read the couple of posts in this thread lending support to that idea in DC. And I guess you missed where even sven said she believes blacks are targeting whites.

No, they’re not. Nobody ever just “discusses” these facts. There’s always a motive.
If some black person was driving through 1950s Alabama, heading for a certain town, and another black person warned him “Hey man, you should watch yourself in that town. There’s a lot of Klan there, and they’re targeting black folk,” would that person be racist? No, they wouldn’t be.
Obviously the situations don’t match up perfectly. Street thugs are happy to attack other blacks if they see something they want, or if the other guy lives in the wrong apartment complex, goes to the wrong school or hangs out with the wrong crew. But given their druthers, A lot of DC criminals would rather smack up a white person than a black person, particularly a petite white woman who doesn’t look like she’ll put up much of a fight. I don’t see anything egregious or particularly racist in giving a heads up to a clueless looking white chick waving her gadgets around in a shitty neighborhood.
As other posters have pointed out, racial politics in DC are entrenched and depressing. It really isn’t as bad as you might think, given the earlier posts. It’s not like black folk and white folk are constantly staring balefully at each other. Most of the places I hang out in are racially mixed, and everyone gets along fine, even when we’re pretty drunk. But resentment and suspicion exist, and it would be dishonest to discuss DC life without acknowledging it.

DC is pretty much a city of haves and have nots. The white middle class left in the 40s, 50s and early 60s and to a large degree, the black middle class left in the 80s and 90s. Throw in the area’s general income inequality and you get some pretty wild disparities. It isn’t uncommon for a small three bedroom rowhouse in a gentrifying neighborhood to still cost in the low 300s. As a result, a lot of poor folk are getting pushed out of DC because of rising rents.
For historical reasons, in DC the assumption is that white folk moving in to a neighborhood are going to be rich. This isn’t to say that a black professional moving in to the neighborhood isn’t going to have similar issues, but a white person will probably be more of a target. I think that an black professional woman walking the neighborhood zoned out while playing with her iPhone would be in trouble as well. However, a white woman may be a more likely target just because the assumption here is that she has money.
Chessic sense, where are you that you are getting abused by residents stating that you don’t belong there? I’m in a demographically similar neighborhood to even sven’s and I’ve never had anyone give me that kind of comment.
Nitpick, I’ve also never heard anyone here refer to the east side or the west side. It’s strictly by quadrant. NW, NE, SE, and SW although that is a pretty small part of town. From even sven’s description of her neighborhood, I would guess that she’s in NW. I have a pretty good guess of where she is, but I won’t identify the neighborhood.
Come now, that’s stupid. Of course it’s “plausible”. Do you honestly think that white people will never be targeted because they are white? Here’s a link to the recent riots at the Wisconsin State Fair where white people were specifically targeted. I sympathize with denouncing racism where ever it exists, but to think that “targeting white people” is an absolute impossibility is absurd. Especially in a racially charged area like DC.
