Damn… the world sucks just that much more now.
It could be worse. It could have been Ringo Starr or Paul McCartney. The last thing this world needs is to lose another Beatle. (Not saying that losing Edwin Starr is a good thing, mind you.)
That’s too bad… very sad news.
F_X
damn man, Edwin Starr rocked. His original version of war was the best one out there (DOA’s comes in second
)
He was always good for a trivia game question: Who wrote War? More often than not you’d hear the band War or Springsteen.
He lived just a couple of miles away from me and his last ever interview was given to the local newspaper.
You can read it here.
He was just about to re-release an updated “War” with the Utah Saints as a protest, too. I hope it’s released posthumously, for the reason he intended, and as a tribute.
Meanwhile, here’s an unwitting tribute to him released a few weeks ago without realising he was on the way out.
RIP
Kal, you must be chuffed that, though from Tennessee, he chose to live near you.
Was kinda cool, jjimm, most of our local celebs move down south.
If you make your living touring though, the Midlands is a great place to live; Easy to get to anywhere in the UK.
I think that all the anti-war rock stars should cooperate on a rerelease of War, as in the days of Band Aid. I want to see Bruce Springsteen, Alice Cooper, that guy from Green Day, Vanessa Paradis and TaTu all screaming (all together now!):
**WAR!
HUA!
What is it good for?**
BTW, is it true (Popbitch being my source so not very reliable) about the American Idol charity record?
jjimm, last night there was footage of the contestants in a recording studio singing the latter song, so that could be true.
Oh Lor’. What the world needs now is… nationalism.
Sure. Look at all the good it has done for us so far, by jingo.
Nooooooooo!
I feel horrid now…
According to cnn.com, he was a friend of Suzi Quattro, US rock star. Who is Suzi Quattro? I have looked for her on Google and found her. I have never heard of her.
I wonder if she knows her last name is spanish for “four”.
Suzi Quatro was a well-know English glam rocker in the early seventies (around 1973). She scored hits like Can the can and 48 Crash. And she was cute in her leather outfit…
Stateside, she’s best known for:
(a) “Stumblin’ In,” a Top 5 duet with Chris Norman
(b) Playing Leather Tuscadero on “Happy Days”
Robb that was FUNNY!
And Zorro, no offense, but you left out the most important part:
Absolutely nothing! (Say it again, y’all)
I like DOAs version best. Joey Shithead just sounds so pissed, and it fits in so well on that record, which 20+years later, still sounds fresh.
I was playing that song (DOAs version) at work a while back, and one of those stupid baggy pants wannabe white gangsta kids said, “Hey man…they’re doing a Bone Thugs song.”
I really wanted to slap him and shove his crackpipe down his peehole.
Good God Y’all
Jon
I can understand being sorry, but why don’t you believe it? Yes, he really did die. No one is trying to fool you.
