You realize that all of those movies (except Hudson Hawk and Independance Day) have huge followings of both critics and fans right?
The Cable Guy jumps to mind. I think critics were just ready to hate any Jim Carey film.
Batman Forever was another good movie that didn’t get a lot of critical praise.
Not universally, and some of them are put down a lot and not artsy enough for some. Titanic comes to mind. Won a lot of awards, critics are all over it, except for some that think of it as Cameron’s ego BJ and a special effects display without a real plot. The point is, I like watching these movies, they’re a blast visually and they entertain.
I can see that cinema is an art form, but that doesn’t mean (to me anyway) that every film has to be Cinema. Racing Stripes - the zebra that wins the big race? Like that. I’ll stop what I’m doing to root for the zebra, because that’s fun.
Maybe I should have put that on the list for perspective.
Constantine! Of course, we were MSTing throughout the whole movie… I don’t think I’d have enjoyed it as much if we weren’t. But it was still good, and looked great. The first thing I thought when I saw the trailers for Narnia was “HEY! There’s Gabriel!”
Almost everyone of those movies had positive reviews, and some are considered classics. Rio Bravo is considered by most critics to be one of the best westerns ever made. Toy Story is often cited as the best animated film ever made. Men in Black was widely praised by critics. Bambi is of course a Disney classic.
Maybe you just have better taste than you thought you did!
Just for yucks, I went to RottenTomatoes and looked up the critics tomatometer score for each one of them (over 50% is generally favorable):
Bravo…“Rio Bravo”
McQ.......(John Wayne)
Ride with the Devil
Tom Horn
The Ninth Configuration.......(William Peter Blatty)
Not Another Teen Movie (28%) is one of my favorite movies of all-time.
10.5 (4.1 on IMDb) is another cult favorite of mine, though that one’s definitely for the so-bad-it’s-good factor.
“The Tenant” by Roman Polanski is a personal favorite; now it seems to have a cult fanbase, but the only contemporary review I could fine (Roger Ebert’s) indicates that everyone at the time hated it.
Daredevil. Apparently I’m one of about a dozen people on the planet who likes this movie.
Sunset
I always wondered why this one langished in 2-star-land.
Then I saw a History Channel sorta thing on Tom Mix and realized that the movie was NOT exaggerating about his wardrobe, cars, or attitude :o
Ading my opinion of Each, I have rated most of these for IMDB already.
Jim
My ratings:
However, I do agree that The Tenant was a great film, and that Daredevil was better than most people thought (though it wasn’t just critics who hated it).
My ratings:
Independence Day 4
The Fifth Element 7.5
Local Hero 8.5
Titanic First 9 hours: 0.1 Last hour: 9
Toy Story 8
Men In Black 5
Bambi 5
Rio Bravo 10
*Hudson Hawk * 6.5
McClintock 3
White Christmas 4.5
You are all a bunch of amateurs.
I enjoy watching…
PAULY SHORE MOVIES.
It’s okay to throw things now.
Mars Attacks! - Ack AckAck Ack! Ack Ack!
Judge Dredd - I am the law!
I love these two, and watch them every chance I get.
Was it? Part of the reason I liked it I saw it because the (overhyped) Men In Black was sold out. I hadn’t heard anything about it, and was suprised by how good it was. Maybe I was just oblivious to the hype.
Me to!!
Two of the most unbelievably unbelievable movies I ever watched were Kill Bill and Kill Bill 2. But they were still good.
Whatever you do, if you have not already, do NOT watch Elektra. Like you, I enjoyed DareDevil (more than either *Spider-Man *movie, actually) and watched it out of curiosity and I still have nightmares close to a year later.
I also liked The Punisher and the *Blade *trilogy.
I’m a Marvel fanboy.
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes – my all-time favorite schlocky movie.
