I live in Michigan.
Mid Michigan
We are one of the 8 hotly contested states for the Presidential Election.
We also, have a Senate race, very hotly contested and both Republicans and Democrats see it as a “must win”
In Mid Michigan, our House of Rep seat is also open and both major parties see it as a “must win”
We also have a state wide ballot on extending public funding for private schools. Can you say “controversial”? I knew that you could.
Result?
Nonstop political ads.
For 41 more days.
Please!!! what I wouldn’t give for a dog food commercial or a sports utility vehicle commercial or even, a “feminine product” commercial!
We are not even close to being considered a “Must Win” state, presidentally. Haven’t seen the first commercial.
Oh yeah, Trent Lott is up for re-election. Has an opponent and everything. His chances of losing? Zip. TV ads so far? Nada. No clue on who his opponent is.
Nothing on the ballot this year that could be construed as interesting.
One Represenative seat up for grabs. It’s one of those races where you hate the guy in the seat, but everyone votes for him anyway (See also: Bennie Thompson, Strom Thurmond, et al…)
So… with 40 days till election day what do we have?
Here in Jax, every blasted political ad I see talks about health care for seniors. I’m guessing there is NO OTHER ISSUE in ANY race?!? I know lots of people retire to the Sunshine State, but SOME of us are still working and have kids in school and we have other interests and concerns.
I’ll be so glad when all this is past…
It’s enough to make me want to burn my voter registration card…
And if I see one more Spencer Abraham or Debbie Stabenaw(sp) spot I will have to stink-bomb both of their campaign headquarters. (could they have any more finger pointing?)
For those of you commiserating in MI, I have seriously considered calling all campaign headquarters and telling them “I promise to vote for the candidate that shows the ** fewest ** ads”
sigh.
thanks for the offer in Mississippi, and Florida??? Um, isnt’ that another one of the 8 hotly contested ones??/ you poor souls.
Here, on the other hand, (S.F. CA) we have no contest at all. Practically the whole state is Democrat-run, and W just went though and will not be back before elections (he’s given up CA). We do have one importasnt Senate race, but the Demo is sure to win (Di Fi), so not much action.
Actually, I can’t remember seeing a political ad. I don’t think I have seen one in months. Hooray!
I’m feeling very fortunate – all they do is post me my ballot, and if I don’t want to hear about American politics, all I have to do is change the channel for three minutes during the 6 o’clock news!
(Of course, I do have to hear all about British politics…)
According to an article that appeared recently in the * Washington Post** (Tuesday 10/31), Lansing MI is the swinging city in teh swing district in the swing state. There was a study done by one of our local TV stations, they counted a total of 196 political ads on all 5 stations from 6 to 11:30 pm. The station managers are having to turn away business from retailers and product manufacturers, so we can hear more from the Mayor of Milwaukee (who wants us to have school vouchers for some reason), and governors and senators from damn near every OTHER state in the country.
One thing that I personally find VERY interesting, is that we’ve not been seeing our own guv on these ads, tho’ he’s very vocal about supporting GW and ol’ Spence. They feel, apparently that John McKane will appeal to more Michigan voters than John Engler…
I myself had to chuckle when watching TV last night. An advertisement came on for California State proposition XX (don’t want to mention the number and start a debate on the proposition) saying “YES on prop. xx is supported by unions, teachers, taxpayers, law enforcement, etc…” with a list of group names, almost immediatey followed by another advertisment saying “NO on pro. xx is supported by unions, teachers, taxpayers, law enforcement…”, also followed by a list of group names.
I’m also in Michigan. Today, I received a call from the Michigan Democratic Party, warning me that if I vote Republican, I will have made a “huge mistake and the country will pay dearly for it”. Oh my, does this mean if Bush wins, the Dems are planning to blow up the country or something? Not that it matters to me, because if Bush wins, I’m moving to Sweden along with Montfort.
the races are also close, so we are inundated with political commercials. The underlying tone of most of these ads is so patronizing, as if the narrator were an adult addressing children.
