I just had this exact discussion with a member off-board. Checking the free porn search engines for “real female orgasm” or “real orgasm” will produce a range of interesting and believable results. I can’t or won’t watch any variety of pornography unless I’m certain or near it that the female partner is actually enjoying the act. Now is a great time to make use of categories and search functions, no need for guesswork based on cover art.
I don’t think there is anything to understand about porn. It turns you on or it doesn’t. I don’t like porn myself and didn’t enjoy it even as a kid. But I have known plenty of women who enjoy a little porn and it certainly doesn’t bother me. I also have talked with plenty of guys who don’t seem to have boring sex lives but like to include porn in thier sex lives to one degree or another.
Now that’s an interesting point. That may be part of the fakiness that is so annoying, I never really thought about it, as I said I’ve not watched any since it was “horrible 80s porn”. I hadn’t thought of this for years but, (I think it was Erica Jong who said this), something to the effect of “porn is like two brillo pads fighting over a hot dog”. 
I know this is probably a joke but anal is one of the most common elements in a many porn vids today considering you can switch from vaginal to anal half way (or less) through the intercourse scene. Best of both worlds as they say. Not that I like anal.
And one more thing: a lot of porn today (or the porn that I’m subjected to) is mainly just the scene. All other elements are discarded, like a story, talking, music etc. Just a bare bones sexual act. It seems many people (probably mostly men) get serious pleasurable sexual stimulation from seeing people have sex or masturbate. I even saw one documentary about sexual fetishes where a straight couple would have another man come over to have sex with the wife where the husband would watch, as a form of foreplay (i.e. not a threesome, before or after). A bit extreme I know but there it is.
Modern porn has almost entirely given up this sort of thing. “Hello, I’m the plumber!” “Come in! Thank you for fixing the sink. Oh, I don’t have any money to pay you, if only there were some way I could make it up to you…whoops, the water squirted all over your shirt. You’ll have to take it off!” For some reason porn on video in the olden days of the 1980s almost always had some silly storyline and “lines” for the “actors” to “say”.
Nowadays most porn is just people having sex, with no need to pretend they’re characters. The only setup is having the woman do some chat about how she likes sex and porn and whatever. I suppose particular fetish porn might need some storyline/acting–you need to set up the scene otherwise it’s just people having sex. But generally porn isn’t watching two actors pretending to be a librarian and a plumber having sex, it’s watching people have sex.

Still a few exceptions, but, yeah, you’re right, they’ve thrown away the dramatic plotline for the equivalent of the old “loops” porn. Nothin’ but doin’ it. (The recent Addams Family x-rated spoof was actually rather nice as an exception; some of the humor was fully worthy of the original tv show!)
Porn is to sex what cooking shows are to eating. It may not resemble what you get at home, but it can be fun to watch.
BTW this was around on tape since the mid-late 80s rise of direct-to-video porn and was already a niche in print in the late 70s. Rule 34 is older than the Internet
Actually there was a recent burst of attempts at real-parody porn – since the end of the first age of “real movie plot” porn, what you had were mostly knock-off pseudo-parodies that were only vaguely resembling the mainstream reference or even barely using a munged title and a similar theme. In the last few years there have come a whole bunch of porns that actually make an attempt to copy the look-and-feel of mainstream shows and even use some of their plotlines (and actual names of the parodied show or comic) – for instance the referenced Addams Family, the 1960’s Batman (SFW Trailer), Seinfeld, Avengers, Star Trek TNG (SFW Trailer), Star Wars ANH, etc. Of course, everyone quicky jumped on the bandwagon and what quality there may have been promptly headed for the usual porn standard.
Ah yes, as a frequent viewer of porn and cooking shows/Food Network, I know exactly what you mean. Good thing porn stars don’t get “Chopped” 
Well personally, I like watching attractive, naked women enjoying each other… That simple. If I sense that the performers are not enjoying it or faking it, I’m not interested.
Not all porn studios are made equal, but there’s a few that seem focused on the enjoyment of the performers as opposed to “playing it up” for the camera. Lesbian pornography in particular seems to have quite a few of such studios.
I like how this thread in particular just blew up, guess everyone has an opinion on this taboo topic (or maybe not so taboo in 2013).

Hm. Porn - well, I’m currently in a relationship where the sex is amazing, but not as often as I might like, so on those occasions where I’m feeling randy and she isn’t available for whatever reason (not up to it, out of town, etc.) I’ll occasionally partake. To me, the visual aspect is nice, but actually it’s the sound of a woman in heat (I know, not really, but go with me) that does it for me. Pictures don’t really do it, although yes I can get off to them if I have to, but thanks to the Intertubes, that’s not a problem anymore.

We had a porn channel on satellite, “Eurotica” I think it was, for a few months – just about long enough to lose interest in it. Near about when the subscription was to run out for us, I saw this title in the listing, MacBeth. I watched it for a while, it was the oddest thing. There were things like war scenes, political meetings, duels and the like, done really rather well, like some kind of epic, punctuated with scenes of the main character schtupping some woman. What sex scenes I saw were not all that imaginative or interesting, but I sure would like to see the whole movie once (it was rather long) to see if it had some kind of coherent plot.
Remember “The Tom Green Show”? He had a guest on one episode who was a black gay male porn actor, and they showed an excerpt from a movie he made that was a parody of “Backdraft”, called “Blackdraft.” This guy walked into a cheap motel room wearing a rain slicker and a hard hat, carrying a garden hose, and says, “Where’s the fire?” and another black guy says “In my pants” and then it cut back to the show.
Back when porn was first going mainstream, but was still often subject to obscenity charges, there was an idea that if you put in story and characters, it would be harder to make an obscenity charge stick. How much validity that idea had, I can’t say.
