I don't understand the intensity of the hatred for Trump

I think they say Cyrus, not Darius: Cyrus released the Jews from Babylon and let them return to Israel.

For those of us who have (unfortunately) had Trump as a dayglo spectre throughout much of our lives it is hard to do anything but hate the man.

He has been a by-word for bad taste and despicable behaviour for as long as I can remember. His business practices have long been a joke, he is a proven liar and cheat. His attitude to women, minorities, poor people and…well, pretty anyone who isn’t him, is horrrific and is a matter of record.

He seems to me to be an obviously terrible choice for any position in high office. That he managed to attach himself to the Republican party is possibly the single most damaging act in US politics in living memory. And sadly it appears he hasn’t finished yet.

Yes, you’re right. Cyrus, not Darius.

I try not to follow the religious nuts too closely. It’s too depressing.

As we are veering off topic in this thread, I’m moving some of the most recent responses to a new one.

Oh, he’ll do that alright, to be sure, no matter what.

Only question is whether he takes the rest of us with him.

There was a New Yorker cartoon from the '30s where a bunch of clearly rich people were together, and the caption read “Let’s go down to the Translux and hiss Roosevelt.” There appeared to be a lot of hatred for Al Smith because he was a Catholic.
On November 22, 1963, a kid down the block whose father was a local Republican leader cheered JFK’s assassination.
Newspaper and magazine letter columns censored strong language of course. You must have been hanging with the right kind of people. I bet KKK meetings had a bit of hate.

FDR 1936:

I wasn’t around for the Roosevelt-era hatred, but I think the cheering for Kennedy’s death was less than would be seen tommorrow if, God forbid, either Trump or Biden dies.

There always have been haters, but there was a time when few Americans (I don’t have any international opinions on this) would admit to hating. For a while, Hitler gave hatred a bad name.

I was never taught that hating was a bad thing. Certainly you need to thoughtful about it. But if we can’t hate someone like Trump, who can we hate?

Once-upon-a-time conservatives wanted to actually govern.

Now, they have no policy opinions they fight for. Republicans literal goal is only to obstruct and own the libs (they have said so). Trump had a republican majority in the government for two years. What did they do except reduce taxes for wealthy people (really asking)?

it might be helpful to ask if the OP understands the intense hatred of other demagogues or would-be tyrants. In other words, is the OP’s lack of understanding due to his defining Trump as other than a demagogue or would-be tyrant, or due to him classifying Trump as such but somehow distinguishing him from others in that class? I will @ him here–@Dodgy_Dude–in the hope he will return to this thread and clarify this matter.

Additional points:

Trump inherited from his father who gained from government contracts.

He was for many years a supporter of the Democratic Party and a good friend of the Clintons.

He gained from provisions benefiting the rich made possible by his, Bush’s, and Obama’s administrations.

I’d like to see some kind of cite for this, please. I have a Trump supporting neighbor who claims that after being born dirt poor, Trump built himself up into a billionaire without assistance.

I hope you disabused him of that falsehood.

Many people are saying that Trump is a self made man of strongly proportions.

I’ve heard that one before. The biggest difference to me is the Jews didn’t pick Cyrus. The Evangelical Christians on the other hand said, “Yeah, that’s a man who really represents my values.”

Hey, please don’t take offense, but your username and Avatar perfectly match a with member over on a survivalist board that I’ve been keeping an eye on for an extended period of time.
Over there, your Doppelganger has been a loyal MAGA.
On the other forum, I’ve seen people post about infiltrating “libural” websites just to get a kick out of their responses.

Is that you over there too?
Asking for a friend…

Let’s not make this personal. Address the post, not the poster. Thanks.

Google Fred Trump. He owned lots of housing, and got convicted of discrimination, but refused to pay the find, which is where Donald learned his stalling tactics, no doubt.
I also think someone did a study showing that if Trump just invested his inheritance in an index fund he’d be richer than he is today.

Back when I was a conservative, I subscribed to National review from about 1967 - 1972. Strong opinions, but also highly intellectual arguments for conservatism, and I don’t remember hate, though by today’s standards it might have been kind of there. But nothing blatant. Buckley came out against the John Birch Society when they still had power.

I do wonder how much of that is the poor performance of his business, and how much is his wasteful lifestyle.

For instance, if instead of buying and maintaining a 757 for personal travel, he had put that money into an index fund, he’d certainly be richer.
