I don't understand what Jenn Sterger is up to (regarding Farve)

I too fail to see any way in which Jenn has tried to exploit the situation, either for money or publicity. If anything, for those trying to get to the bottom of the story, she’s been frustratingly quiet.

That’s the genius of her current PR campaign. She’s appearing to be an innocent victim in this, which improves her current and long-term marketability.

Ya know, sometimes an innocent victim really is exactly that. Sometimes the simpliest explanation is closest to the truth. To characterize her innocence as part of a genius marketing scheme is to add 1 + 1 and get 12.

Then why isn’t she out cashing in on…money and publicity? In fact, why is she actively turning it away? Listen - of course she’s an attention whore. She’s a friggin’ TV personality, and broke into the business based on her looks. Mission fucking accomplished - but now she’s clearly doing a very good job at what she does, and it seems pretty clear that the best thing for her “long term marketability” is to improve on the image of being good at her job, rather that just looking good.

Are you whooshing us with intentional irony or are you being serious? Since I can’t tell from your posts, I’m going to take it as seriously as it deserves.

She is the innocent victim. Even if she has some weird long term plan to promote herself due to this event, she’s still an innocent victim. Brett Favre left her unwanted and quite frankly creepy voicemails, harassed her, and sent her disgusting photographs. It’s clear from the voicemails that she wasn’t leading him on or giving him any reason to think she was interested in him. In fact, she told a friend of his that he was the sort of guy who’d stuff in her in a garbage can–you’d have to be as fucked up and stupid as Favre to take that as a sign of interest.

No wonder assholes like Favre think they can get away with this sort of disgusting behavior. Because if anybody dares to call them on it, the person who was the victim of unwanted sexual harassment is suddenly the guilty party–oh, I’m sorry, is suddenly the whore. Does Favre himself have any blame in this? Or are we just going to start a witch hunt against her so the Golden Boy doesn’t get any shit on him? He’s a disgusting douchebag who should have retired five years ago, and he’s a piece of shit player, too. His fans aren’t proving themselves to be much better.

I don’t see how Sterger is the villain in this situation. Favre was the one who acted like an idiot and caused whatever problems he’s experiencing. If Sterger had been looking for attention she would have announced this whole story at a press conference two years ago.

Sterger could have handled things better. She apparently decided to share this information with a few people she knew but not make it a public matter. But she should have anticipated that a salacious story about a celebrity like Favre was not going to stay a secret among her friends. And she probably did anticipate that if this became a public matter there would be football fans who would ignore everything Favre did and try to claim everything was her fault.

In very particular, she shouldn’t have passed the story on to someone who writes for a gossip 'zine. (I don’t know if deadspin is normally a gossip site, but much of the rest of Gawker Media is).

To maintain the ruse, of course.

To answer the subsequent posters: her being attached to the story has undoubtedly generated publicity for her. Her behaving as a victim improves the public perception of her. Sitting on the story for 2 years could be a calculated decision based on Favre’s popularity and her own career/financial status.

We’ll see what she does down the line from here.

To be sure, Deadspin is not an outlet you want to give any information you’d prefer not to be sleazily and sensationally treated.

Back to my original question: what do you know that makes that assumption reasonable? We have this lady, and we have this football player. He apparently sent her pictures of his wang. What’d she do?

“Appearing in Playboy” is an exact match for the definition of “Attention Whore.”

In other words, no matter what anybody involved has to say, her taking her shirt off and having a picture taken means you can’t believe she’d ever make a decision geared toward anything other than making herself more famous, even if she was in fact the victim of a crime who tried really hard to keep the story quiet for fear that a bunch of barely-bottled-up misogynists, who couldn’t comprehend the idea that any Playboy-appearing whore like her didn’t go seeking out pictures of Brett Favre’s dick, would find a way to blame her for the story.

Is that about right?

No matter how she behaves, she’ll be “behaving as a victim” because she is the victim. You keep posting like this, implying somehow that Favre is the victim in this story, but he is the perpetrator. And no amount of real or imagined “attention whoredom” is going to change the fact that she is a victim of his harassment and he is the only guilty party.

I hope she does manage to make money from this somehow. She deserves some sort of compensation for being on the receiving end of Favre’s not-very-considerable charms.

Also, do you even follow football? You are aware that two years ago, when this story could have broke, Favre’s stock was much higher, and people were more intrigued by his decision to play for the Jets than annoyed by it. Now the only people who still give a fuck about Favre are the Viking fans who have no choice but to throw in with his interception-throwing ass and the Packer die hards who probably would line up to get a shot at 5-inch dick. The fact that Favre is even playing this year is a surprise that nobody, not even a woman with giant breasts, could have predicted with 100% accuracy. If she wanted to capitalize on this, she should have called the press conference two years ago instead of waiting until Favre’s final lackluster year up in Minnesota.

I will admit that there’s a non-zero chance of that being the case. But it’s incredibly unlikely and completely pulled from your ass.

I’m not arguing that Favre gave her a Golden Ticket, rather that from a PR and career standpoint, playing the victim is the best way to cash it in. We’ll see what she does with it.

Your sentiment speaks to the potential effectiveness of such a PR campaign, were one to exist.

Here’s where your point is debatable. IIRC, this news dropped right at or just after the height of the seasonal Favre-wanking the sports media gives him every year. The Vikes have had 2 Sunday night games, a Monday night game, and a national game against the Cowboys to date this year, principally because Favre makes the Vikings compelling TV.

But you don’t understand. Not calling attention to herself was all part of her carefully crafted master plan to call attention to herself.

Time will tell.

For my edification on the issue, has it been discovered how the gossip website gained access to the voicemails and pictures? Has Miss Sterger been cleared of any possibility of culpability in their going from her possession to theirs?

If you have a trump card, you have to know when to play it. She may have initially not wanted to play it at all, and may have changed her mind. No doubt, however, that the window to capitalize on Favre’s popularity was closing.

No shit.

For my edification, why are you adopting a “guilty before proven innocent” stance on this, since you (and we) have zero evidence (other than Sterger acting in a way completely opposite to anyone going for a publicity grab ever in the history of media)?

Ah, one of them there perfect reverse barometers.

I’m just presenting a theory I find plausible and interesting to explore. She could still parley this into a book deal and an Oprah appearance, at the least. A civil suit wouldn’t be out of the question.
