I finally used a Keurig machine.

Back when these things were new, I got a Tassimo - which I guess turned out to be the ‘Betamax’ of coffee brewers. Not as many places sell the T-Discs (as opposed to K-Cups), but you can always find them on Amazon. I like it OK enough, and I only drink a cup or two a week at home, so it is perfect for me. It reads the barcode on the T-Disc so it knows if it is small/med/large coffee, or cappucino or tea or whatever.

I’ve used them. They’re ok, but the hypocrisy regarding the ridiculous amount of waste they generate makes me sick. I’ve heard people talking about “The environment!!” then in the next breath sing the praises of their Keurig. Some people are so stupid.

I’m sitting at my kitchen island typing this. As I look at my kitchen counter, there is a Keurig sitting to the left that gets used for ONE cup Monday-Friday. That’s the cup I need to make fast because the brewing has to be finished while the dogs are eating their breakfast chow. That way, when they are done, we can all head outside, me with a cup of joe, and them to do their bidness. To my right, on the counter, but tucked into the corner, is my Cuisinart Grind-n-Brew “real” coffeemaker that get used on weekends.

Right tools for the right job. I’m not enough of a coffee aficionado to really gripe about the differences in the taste. I add sugar and half-and-half, so I’m already a Philistine to coffee snobs.

Our family is fairly eco-friendly, but we use Keurig. And I have not one ounce of guilt with it.

No matter how much you do, you can’t do everything perfect all the time. We’re not going Amish for pete’s sake. We never put chemicals on our lawn and garden, we recycle, we keep our furnace set low, we monitor our electric usage pretty strictly, we buy as much second hand as we possibly can, etc. But dang it, I’m gonna use my Keurig whenever I bloody well please. And it’s not like we’re going through 100 a month.

So I don’t really appreciate the insinuation that we’re “stupid.”

There is an after-market product grounds holder for the Keurig, so you don’t have to use the K-cups. I had one for mine, and that was back in about 2006. The pot worked fine for my office, but I sold it when I retired.

My daughter let drop that she might get one for us, but even if we had the counter space, I don’t like their coffee. Shit, I like Aldi instant better.

I find the exact opposite to be true. So many people criticizing how environmentally wrong the k-cups are, but they are all driving gas guzzling SUVs. How hypocritical.

While that is a bit of a concern, I clean ours out and compost the grounds and the paper filter. Our city takes the plastic pod and the foil for recycling.

As for the Kuerig, I had to be dragged kicking and screaming to use it, but now I love it. After much searching to find the brands and flavours that I liked, I now only buy them on sale, averaging about .50 to .65 each.

As for the model the OP discussed, it’s definitely not your across-the-counter type. Ours is fast and incredibly simple.

There is a selection for stronger coffee. It does make a smaller cup.

Keurig also has a carafe with carafe sized cups.

I don’t understand this statement. You don’t like any of the coffee that is available in K-Cups? Peet’s, Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts, etc.? Are you sure you like coffee?

If you put a spoon in your cup, let go of it, and it falls over and hits the side if the cup, that is not coffee. I used a Bodum electric vacuum coffee maker, which produces a really nice flavor, but we had to stick something under the edge of the carafe to trick it into brewing long enough.

We now have 19 threads with *keurig *in the title…pretty soon we’ll have a sub-forum quorum, I think. On the bright side, this has been much more polite than some.

I love coffee. None of those brands you named makes coffee I like.

Melitta! Green Mountain! Gevalia!*

  • That sounded like a spell from Bored of the Ring.

Until Peet’s began offering K-Cups, I couldn’t find a brand that I liked or that was remotely strong enough for my tastes. An 8oz Peet’s dark roast on the “strong” setting may not be nearly as good as getting one from one of their stores, but it is decent quality (IMO) and also saves me a 10-mile drive to the nearest Peet’s (I refuse to drink Starbucks, hate their flavor) which isn’t so great for the environment either.

I’d have to have coffee first.

My only question is who the hell needs DRM for coffee?

They do it in an attempt to control third-party K-cups.

I don’t get the appeal seeing how 1-4 cup coffeemakers run $10-30, I don’t see the appeal of a keurig which seems far messier, more expensive and causes more trash.

I’d rather get something like this.

Aldi makes K-cups of their brand. My Mom is hooked on their Hazelnut flavored variety. She got the Kuerig for her one cup a day habit. She brought the thing home going on about how I could use it for my hot chocolate. No. Ma’am. I hate coffee. I have no need of vaguely coffee flavored watery hot chocolate. My electric kettle works just fine.

To add to what I said before, by definition, anything that comes in a K-Cup is going to be stale coffee grounds. When was it roasted? When was it ground? How long has it been sitting around? There’s no way that good coffee is going to be make with that. You might as well use instant coffee.
