Thanks, now that you brought up Arrested Development in an Ozark thread, I get to mention my dumb fan theory (which I’ve already posted in a couple other threads) that Michael Bluth changed his identity to Marty Byrd and started a new life and family.
Both characters are businessmen who seem like the most level-headed person in the room, but are not quite as stable as they appear to be.
The timeline matches up pretty well from the end of AD to the age of the oldest daughter on Ozark.
He even used the same initials so he could keep his monogrammed shirts / cufflinks / etc.
And, of course, both bear a strong resemblance to Jason Bateman.
I’ll second this suggestion. My wife and i watched it a few years ago, and then rewatched it this past spring. It’s that good. It even has a young Julia Garner (Ruth Langmore).
I was friends with the L.A. attorney on which the Lincoln Lawyer movie starring Matthew McConaughey was based. David Ogden passed away two years ago in my hometown of Bigfork, Montana. I assume the TV show is a spinoff of the main character from the movie, I plan to watch it.
Justified is available on Hulu, right? I got through about three seasons of it when it was free on Amazon Prime, but never finished it. We’ve got a Disney+ subscription and I keep thinking I need to upgrade to “the bundle” so I can finish watching it.
Is there a Lincoln Lawyer thread? I hate to sidetrack this one. We’re trudging though Lincoln Lawyer, just not enough time. What puts me off is the main character’s accent. Canadian?
Ideas for the OP +1 on the Wire. IMO the best show ever. I enjoyed The Killing. The first 5 seasons of Ray Donovan were really good. After a certain character left, I thought it went downhill.
Another vote for Succession- it’s one of my favorite shows. It’s rich in dialogue, character, plot and (sometimes very dark) humor. Its classically great and, at the same time, all brand new. I’m a little obsessed with it and will be very sorry to see it end. Also, you get to see Brian Cox say F**k Off! a lot and no one is better at that…
The obvious answer is certainly Breaking Bad, since the general consensus is that Ozark is a poor man’s Breaking Bad. But of course, if you don’t like it you don’t like it.
The Wire is the best TV show I’ve ever seen, but it’s definitely less similar to Ozark that BB. The Wire is much more serious, and more about society than about the story of one person.
Some other suggestions for just darn good TV dramas:
-The Americans
-Friday Night Lights
-Severance
-For All Mankind
