I found a Doctor Who cosplay outfit that was too good to pass up...but must I dress as a man?

Mr. Smaje and I are attending Gallifrey 2012 in a few weeks. We try to go every year and I have never dressed in costume, although it’s crossed my mind. I was doing image searches just this morning for inspiration. I thought maybe I could find something really simple, like a 60s-type dress, and go as Dr. Liz Shaw or something.

I decided to spend my lunch hour poking around a local resale shop and I stumbled upon this purple velvet jacket. It’s a woman’s jacket, a bit big on me and not very fitted, but it’s a gorgeous shade of purple. And I got to thinking…maybe I should go as the Third Doctor! I also found a white, ruffly shirt that will be perfect.

But I don’t want to dress as a man. I want to somehow make the third Doctor into a woman. I’m thinking about springing for a short, curly, white wig. Could I get the jacket professionally altered and fitted in a week? Would it cost an arm and a leg?

Here’s a photo of the Doctor in a purple jacket (scroll down to first photo):

And sorry – I just realized this may need to go in IMHO. Move it if you must!

Crossplay is very common among my daughter’s compatriots. Have fun.

Hey - we’ll see you there! We’re flying into LAX around 6pm Friday night, checking in around 7, staying the whole weekend and flying back to San Antonio on Monday afternoon.

Perhaps we oughtta do a Gallifrey 2012 thread, see if any other dopers are going.

Oh, and while I don’t dress up (I’m not even a fan of the show - my wife and daughter are (especially daughter)), in this thread are some of Sophie’s costumes which she wears to the monthly Doctor Who Fans Unite screenings here in San Antonio.

Sigh…

Don’t mean to dominate the thread, but here’s the Gallifrey 2012 thread for anybody who wants to get together. It’ll likely just be you and us, smaje1, if previous years’ responses to prior conventions are the norm.

Aw, your daughter is awesome. She’s got a great smile!

Yeah, I started a thread when Mr. Smaje and I were going a few years ago, and it didn’t get much of a response. But it would be cool to meet up with you.

I’ll see you over at that other thread!

heck, yeah. back in the day i dressed up as the fourth doctor, complete with the extra-long scarf, which i still have to this day.

Oh, do it! I went as the 10th doctor a couple of years ago, despite being female, because sweetie A) wanted to build a Dalek costume, and B) he doesn’t look anything like ANY of the doctors, so it was up to me. I’m skinny and have sticky-uppy hair and can do the eyebrow thing, so drawing on sideburns it was.

If it turns out well, I’ll post pics. Mr. Smaje was psyched when I showed him the jacket last night!

I don’t see why you couldn’t go as the next Doctor rather than an existing one. Or for that matter the storyline could be an unfortunate ,although temporary, mix up involving a parallel universe, a scalding cup of tea and a mint Polo dropped into the TARDIS at the wrong moment. I think either way yiou’ll have a great time.

I would dearly love to go, and I would cosplay (or crossplay) with the best of them, but sadly, I live on the Wrong Coast, and am flat broke.

I’ll have to wait for Dragon*con for my fun.

Have a good time, enjoy your costume, and post pictures!!
