Which is why I find myself masturbating like a red-assed baboon when she fucks herself up by stepping in the worm-filled shit that is her own pseudo sanctimony. I have posted about her in the past, but this particular instance finds Montel attempting to defend her, or at the very least dig her out of the shit she stepped in, effectively making him an accomplice in this goat-fuck rodeo of the profiting on the grief of others.
Her and her kind enrage me to no end. They’re manipulating these poor bastards directly with promises of answers or eternal salvation, dangling it before them like a leash at a Chihuahua with one kidney.
I feel compelled to create a rant so evil and hate-filled that the buffet baron’s frontal lobes boil and pour out of her nose like a couple of runny eggs, but I realize with impotence that I’ll only end up sweeping my desk clear in a Five Easy Pieces rage and tossing this fucking monitor through the window.
So what if she is a fraud? People choose to believe her and that is certainly entirely their choice. As I see it, if she can- through her little pony show- give some grieving people some solace, who cares?
You see it as evil, I see it as entertainment, and maybe some mom that lost her newborn sees it as closure. Should it be her closure? Probably not, but if it lets her sleep at night who the hell cares? The non religious see believing in heaven and God as a false sense of closure too.
I can’t bring myself to hate her, just to stare in dumbfounded amazement at people who believe such an obvious fraud has psychic powers. Even religious figures don’t claim that.
I getcha. But the reality shows (most of which are competitive) don’t play on grief, unless it counts when a Survivor grieves getting voted off the island.
The one about the kids fighting to be in dad’s will never made it on the air, and that’s the closest I can think of to a show that tried to make grief into entertainment.
There are plenty of shows that entertain us with death, but that’s not the same thing.
Psychics should stick to telling people where they lost their keys, or if they’ll find their true love.
Oh, what the fuck ever. Do you have any opinions you haven’t constructed out of a desire to seem cool and unusual? Or are you just that naive? This shit drags us all down. On one side there is Sylvia Brown and the Dark fucking Ages and on the other there is science and hope for humanity. It’s that fucking simple, you twit.
I suppose the sad thing would be if we had to agree that, well, okay, as long as she did give closure to these people or help in someway, so fine. But, in the video linked, those folks in the clip very well completely did NOT look like she helped them in any way and instead, were kinda trying to help her out of her hole, like Euthanasiast sees Montel as also a party too. That’s reprehensible. They’re in pain and she’s, apparently, only in gain.
Og how I can’t stand arrogant cunts like that. Her behavior (“No really, this is how I see it / say it is, no matter what the reality is. Duh.”) makes me wonder exactly how much she got for that lousy soul. Less than a Big Mac, I bet.
Exactly. She only convinced those people that there was no hope, that a faker tried to mislead them and that no one can give them comfort or the answers they seek.
As I see it, there’s one very important difference. Most priests, rabbis, imams, etc actually believe what they’re saying. They are (in my view) wrong, but for the most part, they’re earnest. Sylvia Brown knows damned well that she doesn’t have psychic powers. She’s a liar, and that’s reprehensible regardless of how much actual damage she causes the people who listen to her.
What the fuck is your deal? No seriously, who fucking pissed in your oatmeal today? I don’t see how me pointing out that we as a society tend to enjoy entertainment that plays upon the shortcomings and sometimes pain of others makes me out to be one looking to be cool or unusual. Sure, it’s shitty, but it’s a fact. If it isn’t, then why are there so many reality shows, talk shows, and horrific stories on the news? Why don’t our news channels and papers show the happy stuff? Ah yes, because no one wants to pay attention to that.
You’ve never watched Jerry Springer? Any talk show? How about a sensationalist news story? Of course not, you only watch the Discovery Channel and avoid the shows about anything other than the facts. Entertainment is entertainment, you twit.
And you’re right: I hate science. Hate it. I don’t believe in them fancy scientific methods and I totally hate humanity. You got me pegged, sugar butt.
You’ve got very good points, but my contention is that we (big general American we) generally prefer less than wholesome entertainment. Survivor? Jerry Springer? Hell, the majority of the lead stories on the news each night?
But I agree we certainly have our lines and the question is whether or not what Ms. Brown does crosses that line. I just can’t feel bad about being entertained by these people that volunteer to go TV. I mean, I’m not saying that I’m sitting here giggling with glee when it comes on, but entertainment it is.
I hope my original reply wasn’t too snarky, after rereading I realize it probably came across this way. T’wasn’t my intention, I swear. I really like your posts and such, so I definitely wasn’t trying to be mean or anything.
I couldn’t find a site that wasn’t loaded with popups. CBS was going to do this in 2004. RealityTV dot com says one episode aired. It was about heirs competing to get most of their dad’s property after he died, if I remember right. The guy hadn’t died yet.
There’s a difference between watching people voluntarily make fools of themselves and watching Brown feed on real tragedy to make a name for herself. In those two clips, she didn’t even bother to sympathize. She insisted to people who’d lost loved ones that she knew the circumstances of those deaths. Now the parents are going to wonder if someone hit their daughter in the chest before she died, and what’s the firefighter’s widow going to think?
Because she preaches her crap as fact, and charges people a shitload of money to pull a couple pieces of random bullshit out of her ass. The people who go to her and call on her to help them DO NOT think she is entertainment, they think she has actual powers.
This is why people like me and Euthanasiast find her so vile. People who are searching for answers to questions that cannot be answered, and she claims to have a factual answer and is paid for it. I would love to get on a show with Sylvia Browne just to set up a bullshit sob story so she can tell me how my wife was murdered while shes sitting in the audience next to me. I fantasize about harvesting a room full of dopers to fill an audience of a new talk show featuring Sylvia Brown just to sit there with a straight face and bait her into horrific misses. Two hours later we would have a million seller skeptic porn title. Maybe even enough rope to hang her with.
Would that also apply to the marks in the subway, who make their choice to risk the rent on just one more game of three-card monte? If so, is there any point in enforcing criminal sanctions against the guy on the other side of the table?
Just curious to know how broadly you can be okay with “So what if she is a fraud?”. Maybe we’ll see three-card monte on FOX next fall.
Its’ been my experience that there are two kinds of people in the world: those who divide people into two categories and those who choose to live in reality. Unfortunately the members of former group are a lot louder (and viler) than the latter.
Isn’t it possible that Sylvia Browne actually thinks that she does have these gifts? Maybe the situation is not as malicous as some are making it out to be.
