I run IE 7, with Windows Vista on a 4 GB 64 Bit Dual Core Processor 6000+, 3.10 Ghz IBuy Power gaming system.
This has happened every morning for the past two weeks, and to remedy the problem, I unplug the power line to my ATT DSL modem, then re-plug and all is well on Re-Start.
Do you have any other devices in the house that automatically update? Here’s a little problem I have.
I have DSL through the phone company and a wireless router in my house. One of my sons has a Tivo and can’t get the antenna to work with the wireless (too many walls or something), so it’s plugged into the phone jack in his room. When it updates the Tivo calls out with a dial up which kicks me off the internet.
I get kicked off the internet and the phone says ‘line in use’ and I hit the talk button and it’s all modem bee-bop-twang stuff. Happens at random times and even if all the computers in the house are turned off. So we think it must be the Tivo.
Their Play Station and all the other computers and devices in the house go through the wireless. Do you have a device that calls out for updates via dial up?
No. We have another computer, but it isn’t hooked up to the net. It needs a special device so that it will work with the wireless router, but we just haven’t bought it yet - a network adapter, I think y’all told me?
Wife also has a laptop, but it isn’t in use very much and is off and in its case. Does that make a difference even if it’s off it still wants to update, because we use the wireless router to use the laptop?
XBox 360 (which also works off the router) is still in its box due to a recent move.
Because we NEED the network adapter, I have hooked up my gaming CPU to my wife’s screen, but that’s all we’ve done, and except for running an AVG scan every morning at 5 am that’s all the stuff we have going on it.
Because I sometimes game late into the wee hours, when I finish and go to bed, I will often just turn off the screen but leave the computer running.
IANS: I had AT&T DSL (the fastest one) at my other place , but I can’t ever remember it shutting itself off?
This sounds like it could be a DHCP problem. Run services.msc and check what time DHCP is set to release your IP address. If it’s 8am, you’ve found your problem.
DSL is pretty sensitive to all sorts of interference. Im pretty far from the CO and get 1.5mbps, but barely. Ive seen hairdryers and air conditioners kick me off the internet. I usually have to do what you do: restart the router. Who knows whats setting yours off. Someone alarm clock or something dropping the voltage nearby. Whats on the powerstrip its plugged into? Can you plug it directly into the wall?
Im betting once we get VDSL from ATT we wont be seeing this kind of thing anymore., but in the meantime we’re dealing with the original DSL spec, which is pretty crappy.
Just a suggestion, but make sure your Tivo is plugged into a DSL filter, just like your telephones are. That should prevent the Tivo from throwing you off the internet. Every device in your house, except the DSL modem, needs a filter.
