I have finally had it. I’m sick of my current wireless optical mouse. I’m sick of the lag - whenever I let the damn thing sit for more than a few seconds, I have to shake it for a few seconds to wake it up. I’m sick of the connection constantly deteriorating, so the movements get jumpy or fail completely. I’m sick of having to change the frequency all the time to fix it. I’m sick of the “low battery” warning going off a month before the battery actually dies.
So. I need a new one. But I’ve learned from my mistakes. This time, I won’t just go into Radio Shack and buy the cheapest one I find. This time, I’ll ask for recommendations!
I have a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 2.0 and it works perfectly. Plus it was free after rebate. The only complaint I have is that the reciever is about the size of a stand moue but it really isn’t a big deal.
With stuff you will be using every day for many hours, buy the best you can afford/justify. Shoes, spectacles, mice, etc. - it’s not worth having to put up with cheap crap.
I just upgraded from a wireless Intellimouse Explorer to a logitech MX1000 - I find it much better, but YMMV. I recommend you go to a big shop which have display models and paw them till you find one from a reputable manufacturer (Logitech, Microsoft, etc.) that feels right in your hand. Having a rechargeable one is a good plan too, in my opinion. Avoids that ‘batteries dead but no replacements, where DID that old PS2 ball mouse go?’ moment.
I use the Logitech MediaPlay mouse. The response is excellent. The reception is excellent. It fits my hand great(not to clunky). Has all these neat blue lights on it. Of course, I do not use any of the special buttons.
And I’m using a Logitech cordless MouseMan optical. I’m using it left-handed, though it’s for the right hand, and it’s still does not seem to to fit my hand too bad. Response is excellent. It has a couple of buttons that I don’t know (or care) what they do. No little blue lights though. ** slaphead** is right. This one uses batteries and it eats them (takes two about every two weeks)- get a rechargeable one, they’re probably not that much more, if any.
Thirding it. Some people find the size and heft of the mouse offputting, so if there’s a store nearby where you can give it a test grab, I’d recommend it. It’s also a smidge pricey for a mouse (~$37 after rebate, or ~$60 without), but the price on it is falling (new model out soon), and it’s well worth it IMHO.
I looked at that one, but the places I saw were all selling it for $80, which was way more than I wanted to spend. I ended up going with the Logitech Media Player mouse. I would have liked a rechargeable, but none of the stores had any that were made by any company I’d heard of. Oh, well. So far, this one has behaved well, other than some installation problems that I blame on Microsoft. No lag, good response. If it stays like this, I’ll be reasonably happy.
I use a Logitech cordless TrackMan Wheel trackball here at work (not sure of the model number, it doesn’t say, and a wired one at home. The cordless one doesn’t seem to eat batteries too badly, I suppose they last maybe three months, using them 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.
