I got a speeding ticket last month.

This borders on mundane and pointless enough that it shouldn’t be shared, so I’m sorry if you find it boring. If it’s any consolation it’ll drop like a stone to the bottom of the page.

Traditionally, or so I’m led to believe the authorities have had a relaxed attitude to speed in non-built-up areas in the IOM. But during the week I got caught by a copper with a speed camera (and, for some bizarre reason, a pollizei acompanying him) I was doing 45 in a 30 zone. I had just left a 40 zone and had not seen any signs for 30 (also the road was wide, long, straight, and not in a built up area) but as I was 5 over the previous speed limit it’s a fair cop I guess.

Ever since that, I’ve obeyed every speed limit. And if I ever happen to get into communicating distance with anyone who gets stuck behind me, I’ll just say, honestly

“I don’t want to get another ticket”

And maybe add under my breath

“(I was like you once)”

Palm Bay Road, in Palm Bay, FL, is about the only road I’ve seen where people consistently go under the speed limit, probably due to the massive amounts of cops on the road, although I’ve never seen anyone pulled over on that street.

But the fact that everyone goes 35-40 in a 45MPH zone means that people see you coming down the street and assume you are going 35-40, and so pull out in front of you, which means that the safe speed for the road really is 35-40.

But at nighttime with less traffic I blaze along it at a reckless 45, and have never been stopped for it (or for speeding, ever, despite going 82 down the 70 mph highway every week.)
