I checked the mail recently (I hardly ever do, the box is so darn far from the house) and was delighted to see a card-style envelope mixed in with the bills. It ended up providing many hours of enjoyment and frustration…
For one, when I read the address I was perplexed. It was addressed wrong. Let’s say, for example our real names are “Steve and Julie Mag.” It was addressed to “Bob and Julie Mug.” All parts of street address were perfectly correct, funny because we just moved in not long ago. So I check for return address…none. Postmark…local. Handwriting…suspicious.
Warily I open the envelope. Tiny litttle thank you card with flowers all over it. Opening the card…
"Dear Bob and Julie:
You may not know us but we know you. And we just want to say we saw everything you did over the holiday season for us and we want you to know how much we appreciate it. People like you are rare. Thank you for everything.
Love
Tracy, Sue, and Bubba"
:dubious: :dubious: :dubious:
Who are you Tracy, Sue, and Bubba??? What did we do for you???
This happened around 10 to 15 years ago. On two ocassions, about a year or so apart, I recieved announcements/invitations in the mail. As I recall, one was for a wedding and one for a H.S. graduation. I searched my memory for days, maybe weeks after, until I finally came to the same conclusion in both cases. I’d never heard of these people, nor could they be related to anyone I know. The letters didn’t even come from areas where I knew anyone. My name and address were correct, but there was absolutely no connection. The only thing I could figure is that it was some scam, where they sent out phony letters in hopes of getting gifts back.
That doesn’t seem to be a possibility in your case. Perhaps you did some kindness that was relatively insignificant to you, but important to the other person. If that’s the case, it will probably become clear in the near future.
Is your last name something like Smith or Jones, or is it something like Fronkensteen? Because if you have a common-ish last name, maybe the mysterious Bob and Julie did something nice for them and they tried to look their addy up in the phone book and, seeing “Julie,” assumed it was you guys.
Yes, this was the first thing my husband thought, but we picked a specific family because we knew them, or of them I guess, and we delivered the gifts in person, so there were no mystery people involved. (And also, there names aren’t Tracy, Sue or Bubba.)
More the Fronkensteen variety. I’ve occasionally heard of other people with our last name, but I’ve never actually met anyone with our last name. Otherwise, not a bad theory!
