I got banned on another message board!

But I’m not really evil! Actually, I’m more normal and, well, kinda boring.

Anyway, there was a discussion about high colonics on a nursing website I frequent. I’ve been on that site for several years. I was GENTLY providing some skeptical information about how totally bogus a therapy colonics are. The discussion was centering on how much (if any) sludge is lining the intestinal tract. I was encouraging anyone interested to view the ad for colonics (on the website) with a critical eye, taking note of the very many and varied health- improving claims stated, and asking people to examine those claims more closely.

A lady (a nurse, and fairly new to the board) posted a question asking (I thought) something like 'Well if there isn’t sludge in the colon, why does Go-Lytely work?" I answered that there IS stuff in the colon- food that is in the process of being digested… and that’s why Go-Lytely appears to work so well.

Apparantly she thought I insulted her intelligence and sent me PM telling me that she is a Forensic Nurse Examiner with 10 or 25 (she said both) years of experience, had passed anatomy, and inviting me to get unconstipated by taking a soap suds enema and some wine (?) so that her forensic nursing students would have a death to investigate.

Weird.

I wrote back saying I certainly didn’t mean to insult her. I thought she was actually asking a question and tried to answer it. I also told her her response to me was a little hysterical in light of the supposed offense.

She wrote back telling me how very important and educated she was, that she was married to a cop, that she knew three languages and was working some NAFT riot in Florida, and that I had better learn to not cross her or insult her in public. She said if she saw me in person, she would ‘handle me’ in a way I deserved.

More weird.

I told her to quit contacting me and I was reporting her to the moderator.

The moderator never replied to me, but the crazy woman sent me another long, rambling message threatening to beat me up again.

Now, I was starting to get a little pissed. I should have just deleted her message(s), realizing that she was crazy.

But, I read through her posts (not so many of them- she’s newish) and realized she made alot of pretty big claims regarding herself and her various (supposed) nursing jobs. She said she was a nursing intructor, a travel nurse, a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, an employee of the medical examiner’s office, an employee of the police department, an oncology nurse, and infusion nurse, a doctoral candidate, etc., etc. Lots of dramatic jobs. She even said she took in orphans! She really said that!

So I looked her up on the Florida Board of Nursing. She wasn’t hard to find. She was a registered nurse.

I guess this was wrong, but I was trying to point out that the web in not quite as anonymous as people think it is and she might like to reconsider threatening people. I’m not a particularly savvy computer user, and it only took me minutes to figure out who she was. So I sent her a message that included her name and address and told her to quit contacing me. I told her that her sense of self importance was underwhelming me.

I’m not sure what happened next, except that I got banned. I suppose she contacted the moderator about my using her name. I don’t know why they responded to her complaint and not to mine. There are three moderators. Perhaps I got the one that was out of town or something. The message was never picked up.

She did not get banned.

She later posted a melodramatic message about she was being ‘stalked’ by a crazy person and had reported it to the local police, FBI, and a half dozen other agencies, and proceeded to give lessons to everyone about how to protect themselves from stalkers. She seems to know how I located her name and said she was going to sue the Nursing Board for making her information available so easily on-line.

(Note: The various state nursing boards protect consumers from unlicensed and poorly practicing nurses. It does not protect nurses. We pay them, but they work for you.)

I’m going to miss a site that I’ve been a member of for several years, but it cannot possibly be long before this psycho-woman exposes herself. I feel quite sure I was only the first victim.

I’m a little annoyed that the moderators didn’t bother to check with me about anything before banning me. Here, it seems like when the moderators give someone the axe, they usually warn them first or at least post a “you’re out of here” message.

I’m annoyed that you cannot contact a moderator there once you are banned, so I have no way to complain there (you lucky reader, you). Did they ever get my complaint about her?

I’m irritated that I can be banned for a PM, but she was not banned for threatening me (a violation of TOS most everywhere, no?) in a PM. It’s not like I posted her name for everyone to see- just her. I guess my error was greater than hers.

Anyway, I deleted the site from my bookmarks and will move on. I’ve got better things to waste my time on. Although it would be nice to see her self destruct. If her messages to me are any indication, it is inevitable.

Well, it is kind of creepy that you looked up her address and made it known that you had it.

Seems like some sort of threat, that’s probably what got you banned.

Publishing her name and address was probably overstepping thye mark. Even if it was info available elsewhere.
Still, I think you were given a raw deal.

I looked her up because I was suspicious that she wasn’t really a nurse. Being a nurse myself, I know that that information is easy to obtain. She used her name in her on-line name, so I didn’t have to do much.

But I suppose you are right.

Wait, wait – you got banned for a private message telling her you knew who she was? Not for publishing it on the board? And she’d already used her name in her online name? Hmmmm… Unless your message came across as nastier than you intended it, it does seem odd the mods wouldn’t at least try to see what your side was. Maybe the mod who pulled the plug is hypersensitive (for whatever reasons) to stalker complaints?

Given the (well-deserved) attitude toward socks on the SDMB, I’m probably a fool to say this, but is it possible to rejoin the other board under a new identity, at least to lurk and see if/when she flames out? Not to stir up trouble, of course. Or, as you’ve said you’ve decided to do, no doubt it’s best just to move on.

The only other angle I can think of – you say you had posted originally suggesting that other members be skeptical of an ad on that board. I can’t help wondering whether that was an a$pect of the ituation influencing whom the mod di$po$ed of?

It seems you sent her the name and professional information rather than posting it on a board.

If she was threatening you via messages, to me it seems fair that you reply with factual information via messages to her.

If you really wanted to be a part of those boards, I would ply the moderators to see that fact. If not, I’d say ‘F*ck her’ and move on. The Web is a big, nebulous place, and five bucks says that she’d never be able to even look you up.

I’m just gonna move on. I was out with the flu this last week (yes, I got my flu shot, but in early October). Perhaps the combination to too much time on my hands and a slightly cranky attitude on my part didn’t help much.

essvee, colonics are a form of ‘alternative or complimentary medicine’ and have proven to have no real objective health benefits. The many claims of the health benefits of colonics should lead one to be skeptical about them. They often claim to cure everything from food cravings, to acne, to obesity, to dark circles under the eys, to tiredness, etc. I think I saw one once that claimed to cure diabetes and there is always someone who knows someone who knows someone who cured their cancer with colon therapy.

The ad we were reviewing was actually a sidebar ad on the nursing site, and it’s gone now.

Also, I’ve been hearing an ad on the radio for a product called colon cleanse that also claims to clean the supposed ‘sludge’ out of the colon. It’s really just a bulk forming laxative with the main ingredient being psyllium. But if you tell somone that they have 4 - 25 lbs of sludge in the colon that they can get rid of by taking this product, the person uses the product, then the person passes a large stool, does that person now believe the product removed a bunch of sludge (like it claimed)?

The commercial claimed the product was a colon cleanser, not a bulk forming laxative. This is simply not the truth, but as its a supplement and not a medication or treatment, its not really covered by FDA guidelines. Because it’s a basically harmless product, it will likely not draw much attention even though the ads are misleading an unsuspecting public.

Sounds like in the beginning, she was definitely aggressive and high strung. A simple “I meant no offense” after her overreaction seems appropriate.

However, you allowed the drama to continue. After the first threat, you should have sent a short reply requesting that she not contact you any longer, with a copy to the administrators of the board. Then you should have added her name to your e-mail axe list and been done with her.

But by revealing her name and address, you switched the tables and became the aggressor. There is no other motive for doing that other than to be threatening. IMO, you both should have been banned.
