I got embarrassed watching the Pats-Buffalo last night

Never claimed I was.

I also plan on not watching any more games featuring the Patriots for a while, so that I will not be tempted to wish that Brady be incapacitated.

I haven’t heard about this, but that’s just bullshit.

I haven’t seen a Badger game all year because the only way to get the Big 10 Network is to have a sattelite. Fuckers.

That is caused by your relative distance from the stations. The speed of light (or TV waves) is very fast at about 186 mph or about as fast as an Italian sports car. However, it still takes time to get to your set. Most people never notice because they only have one TV station showing a given game. People on the West coast report that TV programs often take hours to get to them from the East Coast which makes sense. In theory, you could develop a car fast enough to watch a game at home and drive several hundred miles per hour to get to a sports bar across the state and win tons of money on bets. Theoretical physicists call this the “Win Paradox” and it isn’t known if it is feasible or not.

Shagnasty, you need to go back to physics.

While researchers the world over claim that this problem is as intractable as what would happen to an airplane on a treadmill, it’s pretty obvious to those of us that stayed awake during the 10th grade.

It’s the “Suck Factor” at work. The Bill suck. Therefore, Channel 4 was shown from the Bills network, the time dilation factor at work due to their inherent suckiness - time slows down when you’re getting your ass whupped on national TV (being a Falcons fan, I can attest to the reality of this over and over and over…).

Channel 6 was obviously the Pats network, whereupon the game was shown in “real time”, the Pats supposed non-cheating awesomeness overcoming any Suck Factor placed upon it by the Bills.

Also, if you drive toward the broadcasting station, the game (or any show for that matter) fast-forwards. That’s why Tivo can’t fast forward past commercials, because your house isn’t moving fast enough.

Yeah! To hell with the NFL and their in house propaganda organ keeping that property for themselves so they can extort money from cable operators, cable operators that want to put the NFLN on a high tier channel so they don’t have to raise the rates of the majority of people who don’t want to pay the increased fee that adding the NFLN to the basic cable package would require.

Or isn’t that what you meant?

I suspect I’m being whooshed here (yes?) as no one would read that much into a post.

As a Dish customer I’ll be parked in my recliner watching all the games and feeling truly empathetic for any other fans that don’t have the same option.

As to your interest in who’s culpable, my guess is that both cable operators and NFL owners share some blame in being willing to let the fans suffer for their greed. If I were blocked out, I’d be pissed at both sides until someone put the damn game on.

lieu, please tell me the straight dope on Dishes.

Doesn’t your picture degrade when it rains, snows, sleets, or even when the wind blows?

It happened to us (in CT, if that matters) when we gave Satellite TV a try, and we had the strongest signal you can get. Which is why we dumped it and went to Cable.

If this doesn’t happen to your picture, what has changed? I find it mystifying.

For us a heavy rain event will temporarily disrupt satellite transfer, usually shortly after we also lose local antennae reception (I have both programmed as options). Can’t speak for snow or sleet but would certainly imagine rusult would be the same. Wind, however, doesn’t seem to have any effect.

For us it wasn’t so much choosing satellite as avoiding cable. We had cable before when the neighborhood was new and construction would cause it to go out for days at a time. Even when working they repeatedly tried but could not remove some slight fuzz from the picture. That’s when we switched and the brief weather interrupts never were enough of a reason for us to switch back. We’ve since upgraded to HD, probably have 30 or so HD channels and are pretty satisfied overall.

Really, it’s whatever works best in your area. Our situation is going to vary widely from others. If cable works for you and you’ve the stations you want (NFL Network?) then I’d see no reason to switch.
