I got fired

Or as the manager said “I’m afraid I’ll have to let you go.”

It wasn’t because I screwed up, or because I was a bad employee though. I was hired seasonally, and she over estimated the amount of customers she’d have and since there wasn’t a need for seasonal help, she had to let me go. I don’t really blame her; what can she do? It’s not like she’s going to cut hours of her regular staff just to accomadate me. I don’t know who I’m upset at, but I guess I’m just upset at the situation. What really irks me is how right after I accepted her offer, no less than four places at the mall closer to home called me to ask me if I was still looking for a job. I’m not in desperate need for a job; I already have two other jobs, and I have enough money to get through this year of school, but I just wanted to get some retail experience, and thought even if it was seasonal, it’d give me a head start.

Life isn’t really going well right now. :frowning:

Sorry to here about that. Keep you chin up, you’ll be fine.

Hey, I’m sorry; you’ll find something soon, I’m sure. But keep one thing in mind. You weren’t fired; you were laid off. No need to make it more negative than it already is. You need to be positive for the job interviews you’ll be going on soon. Good Luck!

Don’t forget to get a letter of recommendation from your boss. She probably feels bad about letting you go so will write a good one. Make the most of it.

I don’t know about getting a letter of recommendation. I was only there for two weeks. I worked a total of five days, and of those five days, I only worked with the manager once; it was for like three hours (maybe even less) so I don’t even know if I feel right about using her as a reference. I don’t even think I can put it on my resume…

Two weeks? I’ve had colds that lasted longer than two weeks. Yeesh.

Anyhoo, good luck in the job search.

I worked for 3 months(part time) I was very flexible, when they called me to come in I did, or if they weren’t busy, I’d go home early. I asked if I was doing a good job, 'Yes everything is great" Then on day I walked in the door for a shift and the AH* office manager told me AT THE FRONT DOOR, that they hired someone else! Full time. This place didn’t have enough business for the staff they had. I asked him if I was fired, he said no, so I asked him for a letter of reference. I had NEVER worked with him. He gave me a good letter, not great but good.

7 Up Yours I would ask for a letter, or not use the place on your CV.

What’s CV short for?

I think I spent more on “work appropriate clothes” than I made there.

Resume. CV is a wacky European term.

Curriculum Vitae. It’s latin cos we Europeans like showing off our learnin’.

You might check to see whether you’re entitled to unemployment insurance. It’s not much, but it could help. The rules are different in each state, and I don’t know whether two weeks would give you any entitlement, but it’s worth asking.

And good luck with the job search, I’m sure it will work out for you in the long run.

I for one think your attitude and analysis of the situation is very mature and shows a lot of character on your part. Not that that helps you with the situation at hand, but I just wanted to say that.

I believe the OP said he or she still had two other jobs. I can’t imagine unemployment insurance would be an option.

Just for the official HR record - you were not fired. You were laid-off due to lack of work (not your performance - the employer no longer had work for you). May seem like hair splitting, but not when it comes to applying for a new position. If you list this job in your employment history on an application, do not use the term “fired” for reason of termination. As for including this position in your employment history - if you were only there 2 weeks, I would leave it off unless you really need to show it for some reason.

Get the numbers of the four places that called you after you took this job. Call them back and see if they still have openings. Explain that you were laid off (get the manager as a reference), and see if they still have room.

Good luck. Getting laid off sucks, especially during the holidays.

[QUOTE=7 I just wanted to get some retail experience :([/QUOTE]

Christ lady, you WANTED retail experience?

Question: “Would you rather work in retail or have a nail driven through your
forearm?”
Correct Answer: “How big a nail?”
Take a loan and get the damned MBA. You’ll never regret it.

Whut? Howfor do youse guyz think your learned beter than we?

I’d rather take retail over food service anyday. Maybe getting an MBA is a good choice for some people, but I’m happy with a bachelors. That is, if I can even make it through the next two and a half years.

I don’t know what to tell my parents about this either. They’re the type of stubborn pig-headed people who think that if I didn’t leave on my own accord, I must have done something wrong for them to let me go. I can just hear them say over and over again “Remember that time you got fired? You were stuuuuu-pid!” for the rest of my life.

Here’s the facts as I understand them:

  • You’re ok on the money front.
  • You lost 5 days of your life to a temp job (but they paid you).
  • You have four other job offers.

Why do you feel life isn’t going well again?

You come across as very mature about things. But you need to re-think your position. Things are going fine, and they will only get better.

And don’t worry about your parents. Take one of the other jobs, forget you ever worked at the last place and move on.

Just wanted to say,

All the jobs that I got fired/laid off from were, in retrospect, jobs I wouldn’t be too thrilled to work at now. What kind of masochist would bag groceries for 3 years when he could get a job that pays twice as much/hour for half the work?! :stuck_out_tongue:
