I got into Stuyvesant! (No, my daughter did!)

Woo hoo!

Little Pianola just placed into the most exclusive public high school in the five boroughs of NYC…if we decide to matriculate, she’s in with the smartest kids in the smartest city in the world!

Toppermost of the poppermost!

Congrats to little Pianola (who I guess is not so little anymore)! And hats off to you and Mrs. Ike for raising another smart cookie in the tradition of the Ukulele family.

Sieze this hour, rejoice and be glad. If your daughter is just entering high school, dark days loom on the horizon. You’ll need the memory of this moment to fall back on in future years.

With that happy message, I offer you congratulations.

Pianola says that’s spelled “seize,” and sends warm regards to Auntie Delphica.

Stuyvessant is a fantastic school, congrats. I woulda gone, but my parents are stupid and moved to the burbs when I was three.

Bet ya’ think I didn’t get into Stuyv…no, Styuv…err, fergit it! Congratulations anyway.

Been there. Done that.

[Nonchalant smilie goes here.]

Kidding, Uke, kidding.

Wow that’s fantastic! If your kid is anything like you (smart and smart-assy), and Stuy is anything like it was 25 years ago (excepting the tumbling plaster of the old school, of course) she’ll fit in just fine.

I know that music is important to, so you might appreciate knowing Theloneous Monk went there.

(Then you might shudder to learn that he left before graduating because he found the Music Dept. too regimented and confining. Oh well.)

Congrats, Ike.

For us unwashed masses out in the boonies, uh, what’s the big deal with Stuy? What does it take to get in and what does it offer?

With my oldest a sophomore, I am very glad we bought the house we did, as it is less than a mile from the high school. Really handy to have her be able to walk to and from school, activities, etc. Of course, she’ll soon be eligible for her driver’s license…

A high school daughter, huh? One of these days I’ll have to tell you the tale of the dress… My advise - keep a low profile, dad.

Heh. That’s one thing I don’t have to worry about here, given the fantastical magic carpet known as the New York Subway System. One thin fare will take a kid anywhere from da Bronx to Coney, Metropolitan Museum to SoHo, Birdland to Carnegie Hall.

Thanks to John, friedo, and stuyguy for the good wishes, and for Dinsdale, here’s a link to what Stuy’s supposed to be all about.

Ike, my heartiest congratulations!!! You and the Mrs. must be very, very proud, as well you should be!

I have me a kid who is being evaluated for an accelerated program at the high school he’ll be attending in the fall - he’s been a straight A kid for years - so I know how proud you are!!

This is, however, also the same child who believes Mr2U and I will be buying him a car when he turns 16. Once the husband and I were able to breath again after rolling on the floor with hysterical laughter, Mini2U reminded us that we had best keep him happy because some day he will be the person to decide when and in which “home” we’ll be put in.

What does it take to get in: You have to take an SAT-like exam, which actually tests you for three of New Yorks Specialized Science High Schools. Of these, Stuyvesant is the most strict about who is admitted in terms of scoring. As many as 16,000 students compete for ~800 incoming freshman spots.

What’s so great about it:

-A chance to go to high school with 2000 of New York’s smartest, most driven students.
-An environment where 99.9% of students can expect to be admitted to America’s top public and private universities.
-A chance to join Nationally ranked extracurriculars such as Debate Team, Math Team and Intel Science Talent Search (more Stuyvesant students have been finalists and winners than any other STATE in the America) as well as a full roster of sports, arts, etc.
-An academically enriched environment where classes such as multivariate calculus are taught, and it is “normal” for most students to progress to AP Calculus (yes, girls included).
-Um, yeah, also, it’s free. (and doesn’t cost New York’s taxpayers any more than any other average NYC high school)
Hello Again, Class of '93

Congratulations Ike!!! I just attended my 10th year reunion. I was reminded again how incredible my fellow students were and are.

Sounds cool, so long as that is what she wants.

It is fantastic when a kid/young adult decides what they want, and does what is necessary to get it. Similarly, one of my nieces just got accepted into a really competitive college bio-chem program. She is nervous, but excited.

My #2 son, OTOH, is currently being recruited by the Illinois Science and Math Academy. Best and the brightest and all that. But it is a boarding school about 45 minutes from us. I think we’d miss him. And he’d rather go to school with his buddies, play paintball and D&D, etc. And they don’t have a band. So next fall he’ll be heading to the local dump on the hump.

Oh, one more thing Uke, you might want to tell lil’ Pianola that someone on this board (::cough::cough::slight_smile: is a regular alumni judge at SING, the annual SHS musical theater competition. Her daddy might want to think twice before he ever bans him or anything unpleasant like that.

Umm… like I said: “::cough::cough::”

Ugh… what’s that stupid smilie face doing at the end of my coughs? You know what I mean.

Wowee! Congratulations!

Just reminding us all that even folk who go to Stuy occasionally screw up.

Congrats, Ike. Mrs. Ike must be pretty smart, because Pianola must get it from somewhere.

Excellent job, pianola! Speaking of jobs…maybe you could put in a good word for me with the head of the English department? :stuck_out_tongue:

Congratulations! You’ve every right to brag.

Funny, tho; I didn’t think you were old enough to have a daughter entering high school.

Then again, I didn’t think I was old enough to have a daughter attending NYU, either.

Care to get together some night and compare gray hairs, old man?
