With the recent unpleasantness at PokerRoom, I’ve moved my bankroll to Hollywood Poker. The big gimmick is that celebrities show up semi-regularly and play the rings and the tourneys. Vince Van Patten and James Woods are the big names from what I can tell. I saw Merv Griffin announced but didn’t see him at a table.
Tonight I was playing with Michael Woods (brother of James and also an actor) and Bill Smitrovich (I never heard of him either). Anyways, so I’m in the BB at a .50/$1 table with J4os and see the flop for free. There’s like four callers. Flop comes J74 with two diamonds; two pair for me. SB checks, I bet $1. Smitrovich raises to $2. Folds around to me and I raise $9 to put him all in. He thinks about it and calls. Turn is another diamond, river is Qd. I turn up my two pair figuring I’ll see a diamond in his hand for the flush. No diamond, but he does have pocket QQ for trip Queens on the river to bust my two pair.
Which kinda sucked, but not as bad as the non-celebrity moron earlier in the night who called a raise and a big re-raise in front of her with 65os out of position to catch a 6 on the flop and a 5 on the turn to crack my pocket AA.
I’d suggest betting much more than 20% of the pot on the flop with two pair. It’s a pretty vulnerable hand, especially with the flush draw out there (note that a 7 also kills you). Two pair is made to be played very fast.
I gave it the benefit of the doubt that the thread would not be about what it appeared to be, and I was right.
However, as i do not understand a half of what is being described beyond it being some kind of Poker vernacular, I’ll just stay in the gutter with everyone else.
And also ask if Vince Van Patten can really be called a celebrity anymore.
